I’ve got admit I’ve enjoyed the last 24 hours. I remember the night of the 1997 Barca game, with Asprilla and Gillespie having superb displays. Last night must go down as a similar benchmark display. The Toon team that night: ————————— Shay Given —————— Warren Barton —- Philippe Albert —- Steve Watson —- John Beresford Keith Gillespie —- David Batty —- Rob Lee — John Barnes — Faustino Asprilla - Jon Dhal Tomasson I’ve seen a number of pundit talkins today, and whilst many acknowledge the level of our performance, many still feel that we’ll be lucky to qualify from the group (as PSG won’t play that bad again!) . Anyhow, the questions I’m asking myself: 1) Was our team better last night? 2) Will our CL group rivals now see us as a threat to them? 3) Can we even win the group? 4) Will our owners think that our handling of the Qatari owned PSG deserves further January cash support? 5) Does anyone - as per the media carp - really want the lazy Mbappe in our squad?
When we played Barca we were prime top two premier league. We had class players. Last night we have a team. When I say team I means everyone. A team full of absolute grafters. And many of that team were under the management of Bruce. And many of them are playing out of their skins for Howe. For that reason I think last nights result is a bigger benchmark that that Barca game.
1. No. Barcelona were the best team in the World back then. PSG are nowhere near the best and never have been. 2. No. As they already did. The gasp in the auditorium when the draw was made. 3. Yes. 4. No. 5.Not me.
We had been prime top two. But when we played Barca, Dalgish was the manager. He had shipped out Les Ferdinand, David Ginola, Lee Clark, and Peter Beardsley. Asprilla and Beresford would be moved on in the following January. Shearer was out injured for half the season and we scored just 35 league goals in whole season, finishing 13th. That game was the highlight win of the whole season. To me, we've a better team now, and can go further this season.
Quite different scenarios, both our teams were good, but our opponents were very different. Barcelona were at the peak of their powers and one of the best teams in Europe, PSG were a dogshit rabble of overpaid wasters.
