Rangers fan in peace guys, with something that's been bugging me: Have Chelsea ever had a ground in the borough of Chelsea and Westminster? I came across a post from District Line who said that you're allowed the name because of your proximity to the Kings Road, and if you moved you'd have to rename (I guess that's why Wimbledon are now the MK Dons), but have you ever actually played in Chelsea?
Chelsea have always been at the Bridge and as a result of Fulham already being around, called themselves Chelsea (the borough is a literal stones throw away). Other option was London F.C.
Their club being the one who is desperate for a move to Stratford. A move that he appears to support, what a fucking hypocrite. Seriously though the guy has to be one of the biggest numpties on this board. He predicted that they would beat United 3-2, a place they haven't won at since 1989.
Crystal Palace don't play in Crystal Palace they play in Norwood Arsenal don't play in Arsenal (Gillespie Road), they play in Holloway, formerly Kent Tottenham are technically a Middlesex club QPR don't play in Queens Park they play in Shepherds Bush. AFC Wimbledon don't play in Wimbledon they play in Kingtson (New Malden technically) Millwall don't play in Milwall they play in Bermondsey West Ham don't play in West Ham, they play in Upton Park The list could go on. Leyton Orient, Brentford, Fulham and Charlton are only a handful of London clubs that play in the areas they were founded in
Chelsea play in the area they were founded in, it is just that area wasn't Chelsea. The whole point though is completely academic though as teams have never been required to named for an area or indeed field players only from that area. Now that would be interesting to see. A team could be called Purple Warriors, but the use of the area name as a club title was probably to form loyalty from a fan base that could identify with that name and foster rivalry with neighbouring ones. Regular punters so a financial turnover could be predicted. Although back at the start of the twentieth century a strong sporting tradition survived and clubs were founded to compete not just generate money often in very uneconomic circumstances. I believe the first Chelsea team had a majority of Scots in it.
Being a moderator on this fine footballing forum I cannot condone such treatment of another person even though it is the absolute truth. I want you all to say three hail Modric's and two Our Levy's
It doesn't stop in London either. Birmingham play in Small Heath. West Brom play in Smethwick. There is no area called Port Vale. Not to mention some small club in Old Trafford. Yeah right the list goes on and on.
West Brom play in Sandwell don't they? And Aston Villa technically play in Witton. Man Utd play in Trafford, as you say the list is endless
The Hawthorns is in Smethwick mate Sandwell is not a town it is a district council covering many towns/areas. Villa park is on the border between Aston and Witton hence the Witton Road End.
I feel ashamed to be a Brummy convert. I live literally 1/2 minutes walk from VP, can see it from my house
I live 16 miles form Villa park bud, and still do, so by birth I should have been a Villa Wolves B'ham Baggies fan. But thankfully I saw the light in 1967. It took a long time coming but I am happy now.
I believe the Chelsea pitch owners association own the name Chelsea FC and this is core to their constitution or something similar. The group were formed specifically to ensure property developers could never threaten to kick Chelsea out of Stamford Bridge and build on it. So if Abramovich wants to relocate the club it would have to change name unless he could get the pitch owners to agree to disband or vote to change the consitution. I may have the detail wrong but ChelseaFC are tied to Stamford Bridge so long as the pitch owners say so.
Sorry mate I couldn't tell at first, another Blue not too far away from Villa park then, it's always nice
I always go to the Villa game mate. Had a seat in the Sky Lounge last year (boring 0-0). Food was good though.
