Harry Redknapp has called on the Premier League to consider temporary substitutions in a bid to improve concussion treatment.

The QPR boss was left frustrated after medics withdrew Sandro just 11 minutes into Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Southampton, only for the Brazil midfielder to be deemed 'fine' at half-time.

Sandro suffered a heavy blow to the head and manager Redknapp admitted doctors must take no chances with such complex injuries.

Club doctors now have the final say over whether players who suffer head injuries are withdrawn, after widespread criticism last season when Spurs' Hugo Lloris returned to action despite being knocked unconscious.

The ex-Tottenham boss suggested football take a leaf out of rugby's book and implement short-term replacements, to allow extended assessment of head injuries.

'You couldn't wait 10 or 15 minutes with 10 men, you just couldn't do it,' said Redknapp. 'So you couldn't give medics that amount of time to look at a player.

'But it doesn't sound the worst idea for a temporary replacement, so that the doctors could have a longer look at the player with the potential head injury.

'That is something worth looking at. Medical people have got to be so careful, they can't take a chance because if anything went wrong there would be massive trouble.

'If someone is very bad you cannot expect them to carry on because if something went wrong we would all be very sorry.

'At half-time there didn't seem to be a lot wrong with Sandro to me though.

'He was fine in the changing rooms, he didn't look too bad at all but obviously the doctors have got to err on the side of caution.'

Graziano Pelle's scissor-kick volley trumped a fine blast on the spin from Charlie Austin to deny QPR any points on the south coast.

Former Saints boss Redknapp admitted Rangers are continuing to count the cost of losing Loic Remy to Chelsea in the final stages of the transfer window.

Redknapp believes QPR are missing '16 goals' after being unable to secure a replacement for France striker Remy, with a deal for Jermain Defoe falling through.

'I thought Bobby (Zamora) was excellent when he came on, held up the ball well, but we are short and we don't have an awful lot of striking options,' said Redknapp.

'We have lost 16 goals when Remy went. It is a problem: you look at last year and Charlie (Austin) got 17 goals and no one else got anywhere near.'

Redknapp admitted he was disappointed Steven Caulker's case of mistaken identity with the police ended up making headlines.

Rangers defender Caulker was wrongly detained by police in Surrey after being falsely accused of stealing soft cheese from a Tesco store.

Redknapp said the incident has had no effect on club or player. 'It is not fair to get accused of that. I honestly don't know the story of it all, but surely he doesn't need to nick a piece of cheese.

'If he had stolen it then he would deserve to be in trouble for being such an idiot but obviously he hasn't.

'How does it get in the papers; how does it get in? We have all been there haven't we, someone tells them.'

I think Harry has his cheese delivered in brown bags.
Good point on temp subs though. The FA have a lot to learn from the RFU

Hmmm, not sure. A doctor certainly has to make the call, not a manager or the player himself. A concussion is a serious injury, your brain has been bashed against your skull, the effects are not known after 20 minutes, or even 24 hours. I have never suffered one, but my son has playing rugby and, even though he was only unconscious for a couple of seconds, its f**ing scary and always requires hospital check up. You have to keep a very close eye on the concussed for sometime afterwards. I met a youngish man at work last week who had suffered several concussions playing American Football and has serious health problems as a result including attacks of seriously low blood pressure, nausea, migraine........a bright bloke, but he said his entire personality has changed as a result of these injuries.

And would you want OUR club doctors, who apparently cannot even tell when a hamstring has properly healed, making this decision in the heat of the moment under pressure from the management team to get a player back on?

Players are only allowed back on in rugby if they have been assessed as NOT being concussed. If they have been they used to be stopped from playing for 3 weeks (I think this has been relaxed - thats the influence of money for you).

Not worth taking risks with this s**t. To be fair to Redknapp, I think his comments recognise how complicated it could be and that it's primarily a medical question. Also, I suspect he didn't 'call for' temporary substitutions, just answered a question about it.

Why not stop football and rugby all together they are very dangerous sports.

Why are people thinking like this in 2014?

I would like to see more blood if possible

Stan's right - any concession in terms of getting a player with a head injury back on is purely based on the pressures (which aren't insignificant) to win games. Wasn't this all sparked by the death of a player who continued with concussion? This is football, and it is an entertainment, this isn't a field sports equivalent of death race 2000.

The obvious answer is to not deduct a head injury substitution out of the 3 allocated. There's enough guys sat there on the bench anyway and it removes any (or most of the) feeling of being penalised by enforced replacements. The use of non-club affiliated doctors / physios as second opinions should negate any claims of manipulating the situation to make extra tactical changes.

What's actually more relevant in this article than the inevitable pearls of 'Arrys wisdom on all things football is the virtual admission that we are yet again screwed on the striker front and were relying on no one coming in for Remy to make things work. How can a club set up for a £100m season in the Premier League on such a flimsy premise? It's not as if it's a surprise to anyone that we are short of strikers (even if Remy had stayed) as that has been the case for the last 3 years or more. Truly shocking that we had no plan B. As ever I think Beard has to take a lot of blame for not getting things done in the back room but HR and TF have to stand up and be counted on this issue.
