Showbiz Showbiz Sticking one on somebody who takes the mickey out of something very sensitive that your wife is suffering, is completely understandable. It's an occupational hazard that's always been faced by stand up comedians I expect. Touch a nerve, expect a reaction. But it sets a terrible example. Some on telly this morning appeared to be revelling in the sensationalism of the whole thing. But I don't think this incident with Will Smith has helped the Oscars. In my view this has dragged the reputation of the Academy Awards even lower than it already was. I'm not generally in favour of censorship of comedy. But maybe Chris Rock will think a bit more carefully about smart-arse quips in future. Many will understand why Smith bashed him. But that doesn't make it right, or admirable. Nobody comes out of it looking good. EDIT: I understand now that Smith slapped Rock rather than actually punching him (which was my first impression). Still pretty unedifying, but not quite as brutally violent. Assuming this was not a stunt, both parties were out of order. But Rock probably more so, since his insulting jibe was premeditated and Smith's reaction was heat-of-the-moment.
A ten year ban from the Oscars for Will Smith... https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-61018821 A bit harsh some might say. But I tend to agree that celebrity stunts and spontaneous silly behaviour crosses the line between entertainment and harm when violence is involved. Smith also stole the limelight from all the other worthy luvvies on the night - probably an even worse sin in their eyes. Hopefully we will see no more thuggery at the Academy awards (except in the movies). Smith should consider himself lucky. All Janet Jackson did was get a boob out at the Superbowl - hardly violent - but I'm pretty sure she'll never be invited back
Why is everything Harry Markle says to American TV being broadcast on the BBC News? And who gives a flying f**k if he comes to the UK for the Platinum Jubilee celebrations? He's turned his back on his duty. His privileged life is no no interest.
I watched a good movie the other day, recorded off the Horror Channel. It's called Doomsday, and it's a British post-apocalypse action movie - a kind of blending of Escape from New York and Mad Max. If you liked those movies I think you'll be entertained. Another film I watched recently was M. Night Shyamalan's movie Old. Didn't hold out much hope for it, but I was pleasantly surprised.
I must admit, when I first saw this advert I thought it was pretty unrealistic... https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/newsbeat-61242917 Perhaps women can go running alone in the city in Singapore, where you get years in prison for dropping litter in the street. But not anywhere else. Daft advert of the week Award
Some moderately good news for those remaining Dr Who anoraks out there; Russell T. Davies is returning to produce the programme He was responsible for re-launching it back in 2005, and it has declined considerably in quality during the years since he left. Perhaps the BBC are relying on him to revive its fortunes as a 'last chance' before deciding whether to scrap it. There has been talk about the show being sold to a commercial channel. There was the same talk back in 1989 when the BBC pulled the plug on the dreadful mess the original programme had become. Sale of the rights to ITV worked for Quatermass in the late 1970's, but that was entirely down to Nigel Kneale, the creator of the character. Oddly enough, sale of Dr Who to a commercial channel might help to free it from the vice-like grip of PC/Woke indoctrination. But the other risks of commercialising it probably outweigh that possible advantage. Good luck Russell. You've got a lot of work to do to fix the show you successfully revived 17 years ago.
I don't agree with Lord Sugar about this matter... https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-61393938 But the way he lays into them makes me laugh Glad he's not my boss...
I agree with this article. EFL on Quest will be missed. https://uk.sports.yahoo.com/news/fa...Xc3lB7HgMoVmWbNplFHluFjP1kQ87pm5O0v0Yp1ard2n5
PTSD last night was an eye opener. Fergal Keane suffers from it after years of covering war and even genocide in Rwanda. Lindsay Hilsom on C4 news is amazing too last night she was near Mariupol, immaculately dressed as usual. We have some **** media, but also some real heroes bringing us the truth.
Since the Daily Mail's headline Don't They Know There's a War On? (Partygate), they have devoted nine front pages to Beergate and one to the war in Ukraine.
They even accused Keir Starmer of "piling pressure on Durham Police" by saying he would resign if they fined him
I hear the UK entry for the Eurovision Song Contest might be battling it out with Poland for 2nd place tomorrow evening No prizes for guessing who's going to win it - possibly with the highest score ever Good to see the music coming before the politics for once Countries that won't be winning it; Russia Belarus Serbia Hungary (only one of the above is actually in it) Countries where they won't be watching it on TV: all of the above plus China. It's their loss
In my view Netflix charges far too much for the content they are offering. Same goes for Amazon Video, Star Wars TV (sorry, Disney+) and all the others. There just aren't enough wealthy bored people out there to support them all. They are a novelty off-shoot. Not the future of television.
If you missed Brian Cox's 7 Days on Mars last night, watch it on Iplayer. The technology is jaw-dropping, with the projected journey back of Martian soil samples bordering on the miraculous. The spoiler is that the samples won't get back to earth for another 12 years.
Entertainment rather than TV. I saw Madness live in Barcelona last night. Big crowd, and a great atmousphere. I last saw them for Madstock back in 1992, when they said they chose the venue as it meant they would have time to get down the local pub afterwards. i was a bit worried how the years might have changed them - a mate saw them up on Blackheath last year and said they were still good but I heard other versions - but they were still great entertainers, and it started good and built to a fantsatic finish. Any concert where you get Baggy Trousers and Night Boat to Cairo is fun as far as I am concerned. Fantsatic night, though my voice hurts a bit from yelling teh word to the songs (and mucking up the recordings for people filming it on their mobile phones around me) 10/10
