So Darlington go into administration for the third time in nine years.............with the best all seater ground outside the Football League (25000). So the Quakers who where pilgrims on the Mayflower 400 years ago have yet another fight for survival.............I'm looking in the sky to see if PandA our circling above trying to decide if there is any rich pickings for their new modified approach to saving a failing Football Club. Will Boston (the Pilgrims) continue this eerie sequence of related Clubs...........who the hell knows.
Weren't Darlington the club that were finanaced by the Man from Doc Martin boots at one time who was a local and spent his money building them up and providing the then new stadium? Shame for them and hope they don't fold.
The face of modern football, community clubs like us, Darlington and numerous other clubs over the last few years have fought to survive administration and bankruptcy, whereas a knob like Rooney can afford to take a £200,000+ hit for taking his wife for a curry. All the best to everyone connected with the Quakers hope they survive.
No Sensible, Rushden & Diamonds were the team who played in Doc Martens. I know this as my better half had a friend at work who had a boyfriend who was an R&D fan [still with me?]. I had the pleasure of attending a game there with them in which a certain Plymouth Argyle walloped them out of sight. I can only assume it was 2001-02, a lovely sunny day in August. The score was 2-3 but that really doesn't tell the story. R&D went 2-0 up in the first half and unfortunately for them, this just made Argyle angry. From there on in Argyle ripped them to shreds with Martin Phillips completely unplayable. The two female partners continued to be friends but we were promoted that year as champions whilst Rushden & Diamonds have recently been thrown out of the Blue Square due to financial failure. A sad end to a very friendly club with a very tidy little ground.
Sad to see that now Plymouth Albion are under threat of administration, there is an emergency shareholder meeting 6pm tonight.Basically due to a financial backer pulling out-they have a shortfall of £200,000;the price of a Rooney curry.
Thanks notdistant I wasn't sure when I was typing it and now you mention it I remember it was them. I know when Argyle were in the same league as Darlington some years back though they had a local who was investing and it was expected they would push on. Instead they stayed where they were and then went backwards. Still a shame for the club however.
It just goes to show that Doc Martens aren't the right footwear to play Football in. Maybe James Brent should buy Albion and move them into Home Park.........and sell Bricklands.........it's not such a silly idea.............Brent knows more about Rugby than Football.
I seem to remember the Doc Martens factory [now closed] was immediately adjacent to the ground. An early example of a a property development benefiting a football club, at least in the medium term?
