I really think you've got that wrong. In a team that generally struggles to create anything, he is one of the few players who consistently makes things happen across games. You feel that with him on the pitch, there's always a chance.
You say he manages to place the ball onto an attackers head or foot 1 in 10 times. Not many of our players bother to get in the box! There's only so much someone like Smyth can do. The other players need to step up as well.
Smyth gets the ball into the box. He takes on players and gets passed them quite consistently, comparatively. It may not look pretty, but a large proportion of chances we create come through him and his persistence. Him probably more than anyone.
I really don't see what there is to complain about with him. Take him out of the team and almost nothing is happening.
I'd rather be complaining about Chair who has lots of talent in terms of ball control but has no game sense, vision or footballing brain and wastes so many potential chances.
What was weird about Saturday was I could count on one hand how many times we got the ball to the foot of Saito or Smith. Strange tactic.
