Looks great. I have just ordered a copy to add to my QPR library. I will also pick up a dozen so that i can give them as Christmas presents. I shall be doing something similar at the end of the season with my QPR spoofs. Again all profits to the Community Trust.
As I have supported QPR since 1954 with only a few years away in the Far East mid to late 60's, this is brilliant. My heroes were Ray Drinkwater, Brian Bedford, and Mark Lazarus. One of my sons worked for Mike Keen at Legoland, I still have his signed photo. We used to get Black and White photographs of the players and get them autographed. Halcyon days!!
I received my copy on Saturday morning, that was quick. After a quick perusal, I came across a piece on page 9, about Arthur Jefferson and Albert Smith. They both played for the Rangers in the forties. They also took us for Football in school, Sir Christopher Wren late 70's and early 80's. Good times, great read, i'm really enjoying it.
Thank you to all those who have bought my book. To date £1040 has been raised for the QPR in the Community Trust. As this will be gift-aided it is, in reality, £1300. Due to the great support from this board, a link has been placed on the book's embryo website at www.qprtheolddays.com by way of thanks. I would be pleased to hear from any former Rangers' players who may visit this board. contact details can be found on the above website.
From Gramps on report ==================== Just had an invitation to go to Loftus Road on the afternoon of 6th December to present a cheque to Andy Evans, CEO of the QPR in the Community Trust. Really pleased about that. Pictures will be taken and duly exhibited here. Second piece of good news: The QPR Press Office are preparing a write up about the book which will be going on the Official Website shortly. I'll pass the word when it appears. Third piece of good news: Although sales have understandably quietened down, we have just hit £1100. Hard work news: I have already printed 50 of the third hundred and am now working on the rest of them so I am prepared for the hoped for rush when info appears on the website and the WBA programme. I also intend contacting the press in the Hammersmith area in a couple of weeks' time. What I am trying to avoid is getting too much publicity going all at one time. It's all down to the logistics and difficulty of producing a mountain of copies quickly. Happily the current 100 is all paid for by sponsorship (thanks CanadaRanger) and the next 100 is virtually covered by the sponsorship from the QPR in the Community Trust. There could possibly be another project next year but saying no more about that yet. Need to survive this one first. I am, with somebody else (who may or may not identify himself at this stage as he chooses), looking at a possible idea. Queen’s Park Rangers: The Old Days (1939 – 1970) by John “gramps” Clifford December 02nd, 2011 | Category: Fanzone This post has one comment. John Clifford, or “gramps” to the QPR Report message board, produced his book of memories of “The Old Days” largely at his own expense. He takes the reader from 1939, through the War years and then right up to 1970 where he chose to draw a line. Work commitments and family life meant that he was unable to get to as many games as before. Rangers legend Mark Lazarus has written the Foreword and former Club Secretary Ron Phillips also contributes with an article and the Introduction. Not only is the book a fascinating read, but all the proceeds will go to the ‘QPR in the Community Trust’. John will be presenting a cheque for over £1,300 to Andy Evans on Tuesday. I think there are a number of other R’s fans who can identify themselves with John’s final word in the Epilogue: “Yes, it’s a different football world now – and, much as I enjoy the game and will continue to do so, I think there is more than just a little bit of me which perhaps rather preferred “The Old Days”. UK orders – £5.00 plus £2.70 postage and packing. For further details please visit: http://www.qprtheolddays.com/ Steve Russell iReader http://www.indyrs.co.uk/?p=997
Well done Gramps, It may not be what you intended when you wrote your marvellous book, and then decided to donate all proceeds to such a worthy cause. Whatever match you choose, enjoy it and all the attributes and the V.I.P treatment you receive on your special day. You fully deserve it. What a fantastic and really heartwarming tale. Well done gramps, a true, life-long QPR Fan. Sir.... I salute you. 999
BOOK RAISES £1,500 FOR TRUST John Clifford - author of 'Queens Park Rangers - The Old Days' - visited Loftus Road this week to kindly donate £1,500 of the book's sales to QPR in the Community Trust CEO Andy Evans (both pictured). The book harks back on John's memories from when he attended his first match in 1939 and extends through highs and lows until 1970 - although he has continued to support the Club thereafter. In order to raise money for QPR in the Community Trust and the Tiger Cubs in particular, John decided to put those memories into writing. Everything raised will go to the Trust. You can share in John's memoirs by buying a copy of the book for only £5 plus postage and packaging. 'Queen's Park Rangers - The Old Days' will appeal to senior supporters who will relish the memories it brings back as well as the younger generation, giving them an opportunity to learn about the way things were. A foreword has been written by Mark Lazarus, a favourite at the Club in the 1960s, and the book contains an introduction and some anecdotes from Ron Phillips, QPR's Secretary from 1966 to 1989. A visit to www.qprtheolddays.com will give details of how to obtain a copy or write to: John Clifford, 3 Redshank Drive, Heybridge, Maldon, Essex, CM9 4UE or telephone 01621 858090. "A book of personal reminiscences for the older supporter, and a personal view on the Club's heritage for the younger supporter," Gordon Macey - QPR Club Historian and author of 'Queen's Park Rangers - The Complete Record.' iReader
