QPR star eyes England recall By Paul WarburtonJul 16 2012 Add a commentRecommend inShare.0 Share on emailShare on print Andy Johnson ANDY Johnson has revealed his number one QPR objective is to score 10 goals â and then catch England coach Roy Hodgsonâs eye. The 31-year-old striker, who earned the last of his eight caps five years ago, also admitted he is reunited with a manager who believes in him â in stark contrast to a torturous last year at Fulham. Johnson has signed a two-year contract with Rangers on a free in the belief he will be a man reborn under Mark Hughes, even though the Whites âtempted himâ to stay. The striker said: âI had some great managers at Fulham, and Roy and Mark were fantastic. âBut although Martin Jol is a great coach â the truth is we didnât see eye to eye. âI had several conversations with him about me playing me out wide â but they went nowhere. âI can play the role, but itâs not my best position, and there are not many wingers who score a lot of goals from out wide. âLast year I donât think I got the amount of games my early season form warranted.â AJ insists injury problems that included a troublesome knee are a thing of the past and was delighted when Hodgson got the nod for the national team, not least because the new boss knows Johnson inside out. The player said: âOf course, itâs about taking one step at a time. âIâve got to first get into Rangersâ team and hit form. But if I am scoring goals, Royâs homework on me is already done. He knows he can depend on me. âI donât think it would be far fetched for a forward scoring regularly in the Premier League to get included in the international squad â and weâll have to see.â The new forward also insists he is a better all-round player than the lightning-fast frontman who was regularly banging in the goals for Crystal Palace and Everton half a decade ago. âI know the theory is that if Iâm in the team, itâs because I will be playing off Bobby (Zamora) at QPR,â he said, âbut I donât agree. âSure, I know Bob well from our time together at Fulham. But there are so many combinations Mark Hughes has available to him, and whether Iâm leading the line or sitting behind linking up play, I know I can do a good job. âIâm grateful to Mark for his faith in me. When I was injured at Fulham, he was very careful about bringing me back, and double-checked all the time there were no problems. âBelieve me, there are plenty of managers out there who would throw players back into the fray before they were ready.â Read More http://www.fulhamchronicle.co.uk/london-qpr/2012/07/16/82029-31403790/#ixzz20n4KRS6Q
Ambitious for a striker with England ambitions - 10 goals. (if you hear a sobbing sound then it's likely to be fatty Holt)
Not sure why players like AJ come out and say things like this. It's nice to have ambitions, but surely even he doesn't genuinely believe he's going to get another England cap.
Don't forget David Beckham hasn't ruled out playing for England either. Maybe there is a seniors cup like the 5-a-sides they could go for?
He must be banking on the fact that Hodgson knows his game and if he hits form he may have a chance. If that can motivate him to knock in a few for us that's great, but I doubt he'll get back in the England set-up...
David Beckham IS Andy Johnson but with a wig on. It's impossible for them to be seen playing on the same pitch without each others identity being found out
I couldn't type for a while as I was laughing so much. He'll be lucky to play 10 games let alone score 10 goals and as for England?
Erm, SWP made virtually identical comments about his England future when he joined us. Is this some of script their agents give them once they are over 30?
I'd rather have a striker brimming with self confidence and willing to take the early shot. Delay in the premiership and you'll be closed down as we've witnessed with some of our current crop. I guess in one of his contracted press conferences he could have been honest and said he'd be happy tucking the odd goal away here and there but frankly he has no ambition beyond a few games in the premiership??? Come on all, this is the new ambitious rangers shooting for a top 10 finish!!
