QPR plan to continue spending in January September 15, 2012 EmailPrintBy Harry Harris, Football Correspondent QPR chief executive Phillip Beard has told ESPN that Mark Hughes is almost certain to bring in more new faces in January despite a major spending spree during the summer transfer window. Chelsea visit Loftus Road on Saturday as the side at the top of the table take on the one rooted to the bottom. Although the Rs have welcomed a number of big-name signings including Julio Cesar and Esteban Granero in recent weeks, they have only registered one point so far this season and Beard believes there will be no end to spending in the next transfer window as the club look to retain their top-flight status. With Premier League clubs set to share a 75% hike in TV revenues from next season, there is a feeling that January will see the biggest winter outlay on record as clubs scramble to survive in order to get their share of the cash pot. Beard told ESPN: "We want to stay in the Premier League, but we appreciate that we have no right to survival just because we have spent more money. But if you do spend more money on players than you have a better chance." At a time when the Premier League owners are seeking greater controls on players' wages, QPR make no apologies for their spending policy under Hughes. "I think we have done some good business in the transfer window this summer, but it is not about buying in one window, we might need to continue to buy in two or three windows, as we look to the medium and long term," Beard said. "Clearly though the short term is our priority and that is staying and consolidating our position in the Premier League. We might have bought virtually an entire team, but the fees have been relatively low, and we moved 17 players out. "Norwich brought in nine while others have bought seven or eight players. On paper we have a good squad, good depth, quality and experience, and we can only hope that that is good enough to ensure we stay up."
I agree kiwi - and it would be nice to see what they're capable of after half a season with each other
One fact I know for sure. We won't be anywhere near the bottom come January. Only additions will be to build depth on what we have.
Ferdinand and Da Silva off injured yesterday, Mbia missed match through injury. Cover in Traore, Hill, Harriman and Ehmer - possibly Magri. Luke Young available for cup games.
we need a CB and a Striker. Priority is a striker. Our gorgeous midfield could be much more damaging if they had a decent striker to pass to. Johnson worked hard - but is he at the same level as our midfield now?
Totally agree with this. Only three named strikers, all of them in their 30s, in the entire squad is not enough. To my mind our squad is way too midfield-heavy. Personally I would have had DJ in ahead of one of the midfielders, but who am I to question MH.
A couple of CBs and CFs wouldnt go amiss. We have no depth there at all. Now we wont even have a CF on the bench because we only have 2 at the club. A Zamora injury and/or a Cisse red card and were screwed.
go back in for defoe as proved again today he knows the onion bag, another two defenders and we are good.
A lot of people said over summer that they think we'll get Chris Samba in January, the journalist David Mcintyre included. Imagine him and Mbia..incredible. That said, Nelson is looking the business at the moment!
I'm quite happy with our defence now once M'Bia is added. Another striker for sure!! Really stupid to sell HH!
How deep is your owners pockets? I believe you could be in financial trouble in a few years should you achieve jack sh1t,
This Well I think a CB and Striker are both top priorities. We also need to sell Green, and get a back up Keeper.
