    QPR plan £3.5m defender swoop

QPR will double their attempts to get a new centre back by launching a £3.5million bid for Nedum Onuoha in the January transfer window.

If the bid for the Manchester City defender falls by the wayside, Rs will go back in for Sebastian Bassong at Tottenham.

Boss Neil Warnock was quick to name Onuoha as the one City player on his fantasy wish-list following the 3-2 home defeat to the table toppers on Saturday. In reality, the manager is hoping he gets lucky second time around after an overture for the 24-year-old fell on stony ground in the summer.

“I’ve got a list of maybe four of five players in the transfer window that I would really like, and if I get them it’s going to strengthen our squad considerably,” he said.

Onuoha has played only once for City this season, and that in a Carling Cup tie back in September. He wants away from a star-packed squad for regular first-team football. But the sticking point for Hoops might be his mother suffering from cancer at home in Manchester.

Rangers will hope they can somehow overcome this sensitive obstacle, but if not, the chase for Bassong at Spurs is the fallback.

The advantage for Hoops in landing Onuoha is that the former England U21 player can play either right or left back, with Warnock admiting he is resigned to losing two of his squad to the African Cup of Nations in January and February.

Both Adel Taarabt and Armand Traore are wanted by Morocco and Senegal respectively, and this is already weighing heavily on the manager’s mind.

He admitted the prospective loss makes new recruits a priority come January 1.

“If these two go to the cup, and it’s likely,” he added, “we need to take it into account.”

Morning Jeff , thought that bit was odd as well, heard Bassong is more or less done.

You beat me to it Jeff, I'd like to see both of them snapped up. Onuoha can cover right across the back four.

Good player and can cover RB and CB.

Mind you i do like Bassong , who was outstanding at Newcastle.

Would take either at the moment.

I find it ludicrous that significant parts of many PL squads will go missing throughout January to play in the African international event. This is becoming increasingly disruptive in Europe every time it comes around. Anyone know if FIFA, EUFA, the FA or anyone else is moving to get this sorted? In the meantime it surely makes sense for smaller clubs to steer clear of those that may qualify for these tournaments. BTW Bassong can play for Cameroon I believe and although they did not qualify for 2012 they will no doubt be back.

I mentioned it a couple of weeks ago that i feel we needed a solid experienced CB (Bassong) and a FB that was ideally two footed. If Onoucha can play across the back four then he would be a fab addition as we currently rely on Young and Traore too much. Would be two good signings. Don't think i have looked forward to a Jan transfer window so much. Hope we are all not too disappointed!!!

I really rate Onouha and would love us to get him.

I think this is the best way to improve our team/squad - the biggest teams tend to buy and play their marquee signings irrespective of similarly good domestic players being on their benches.

They then end up with overblown squads and will take reduced rates for good talent just to free up a couple of mill, slightly reduce the wages and free up space on the bench.

Someone pinch me, we are talking about signing Bassong and Onoucha already having signed Young, Ferdinand & Traore this season. We have come a long way. Will it last?

Both would be great signings. The Man City chap is younger I believe to would prefer him but either one would be great. I feel with Traore leaving for the Africans cup we really do need 2x defenders so both would be great.

I'd like either of them - if we cant then what about Kolo Toure - cut price, lots of experience and pops up with the odd goal.

I believe we should aim for Bassong and Onoucha if we could, would be nice to have more experience players to replace the injuries or match bans

Given how HH dominated Savic last week would not be surprised if Onuoha gets another chance at City. Kolo Toure seems out of favour, Kompany and Lescott first choices.
Can't honestly recall seeing him play, but if you guys rate him......
