QPR lining up £10m swoop for out-of-favour Spurs striker Defoe By Soriebah Kajue Last updated at 11:50 AM on 22nd November 2011 Neil Warnock is preparing to blow the majority of his £15 million January transfer budget on landing Jermain Defoe from Tottenham, as revealed by Sportsmail earlier this month. Spurs have made it clear they will refuse any bids of less than £10 million for the 29-year-old striker, who still has more than three years left on his deal. But the Hoops boss has identified the out-of-favour striker as his No 1 target and believes the player can add extra thrust to their attack. Jumping through Hoops: Jermain Defoe (centre) is a target for QPR And Rangers supremo Tony Fernandes is ready to sanction the acquisition one of marquee signing in January. DJ Campbell and Jay Bothroyd have so far failed to provide a consistent cutting edge to the free flowing football of the newly-promoted side. Heidar Helguson has accepted the goalscoring challenge of late but Warnock wants a seasoned Premier League marksman to maintain their momentum in the second half of the term. In the market: Neil Warnock wants a new striker in January Defoe, however, is still regarded as a supreme finisher, but the former West Ham starlet has struggled for goals over the last 18 months in Harry Redknappâs new-look lone striker formation. This was illustrated by his meagre return of just four Premier League goals last season, as the combination of Peter Crouch and Rafa van der Vaart became the preferred pairing. Crouch has since been replaced by Manchester Cityâs on-loan Emmanuel Adebayor at the apex of the Tottenham attack. Out of favour: Defoe has fallen down the pecking order at Spurs in recent seasons Yet the frustration at the lack of regular football has continued for Defoe who has again failed to feature consistently this term and was a 69th minute substitute in the 2-0 win over Aston Villa on Monday night. The silver tongued Warnock will hope to convince the England striker his future lies in west London and believes the carrot of regular football could prove crucial. Defoeâs close friend Shaun Wright-Phillips has rediscovered his top form since his move to Loftus Road and with Euro 2012 on the horizon, the England striker will want to give himself every chance of making Fabio Capelloâs squad. iReader http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2064688/QPR-lining-10m-swoop-Jermain-Defoe.html
Been said on this board before. Would love to see it but I won't hold my breath. The commentators during last nights game between Spuds and Villa said Defoe had the tendency to be greedy and not always take the best option i.e. pass instead of shoot. Normally that would be a worry but if we can put up with Adel doing it why not Defoe? I think we have been lacking in the opportunist shot department and he'd fill the gap. Still needs someone with him so I'd hang on to HH, DJ and Bothroyd to play along side.
would love to see him here but unless spuds go for someone else they won't release him, after watching crouch on sat i was glad that transfer didn't come off.
What does a 10 million pound swoop look like? Must be classy I was thinking of getting a stoop but of course it's sub standard to a swoop however beggars can't be choosers I will have to do
Wait, hang on, I thought it was for £8mil last week. What the truck is going on here?! Defoe would be spectacular at Loftus Road Can’t really see this happening as they got rid of Crouch and Pavlyochenko will leave soon. That leaves Van der fanny fart and Adebayor (who is on loan and might not be there after loan) which would leave them with one top striker if Defoe was to leave for us. If he does come to QPR though, you can find me running naked down the middle of Uxbridge road with only a Greggs Tuna Crunch to hide my dignity in celebration please log in to view this image
Everyone seems to be salavating over the prospect of Defoe but honestly I just don´t get it, beacuse I personally believe he really is not that great, I mean his overall play? Maybe a six loan would be an option, just can't see NW blowing that sort of doe on defoe! I would like to see us going for a younger player and as NW is a creature of habit as going for past targets i.e. Nicky Maynard or past clubs Zaha at Palace I think both could do a job, the big question is NW willing to gamble a little on zero prem experience? By the way speaking of Palace and past targets what about Ambrose as the midfielder, try not to concentrate on the fact he didn't come last season, what do you think?
Can't we revert to type and sign Del Piero or Raul or someone? We need an ageing Spaniard or Italian imo
Signing Defoe would be a signal that 4-4-2 was likely to be the preferred option as he doesn't play the lone role that well, so a HH & Defoe pairing up front could be just the job. If Adel were to go for £7 or 8 million that would make the kitty up to near £20 million after Spurs take their cut. Add Bassong into the mix, probably around £3 million and there would still be some dosh left for another couple of defenders. It'll be interesting to see if we can beat Defoe's price down, Sunderland are the likely spanner in the works with their £16 million offer previously...
Everything about the above comment is laughable. You're essentially saying it's a no to England international, proven Premiership goalscorer Jermain Defoe, and a yes please to Maynard, Zaha and Ambrose, none of whom have top-flight experience or quality. You must be mad, surely?!
Not really, I just don't see Defoe as the answer, as for the others I have mentioned it probably is not worded correctly as I see these as likely targets remember if we do blow 10 mil on one player the others will have to be a damn sight cheaper also I prefer youthful players going forward. For what it's worth NW is never going to sign Defoe unless it is at a bargain price and that will be around 5 mil mark, in other words don't expect to see him in hoops, IMO!
By the way I also don't look upon England internationals being the be all and end all as a criteria to buying a player what the hell as that got to with it. At Rangers we have always produced our own internationals and not bought them.
Hopefully Defoe will realise that Sunderland are going nowhere and the fact that he must have the common sense to know that Sunderland is blatently a crap place to live. If he can’t agree to personal terms with Sunderland then we still could pick him up for much less than £16 mill.
