The former Reading man has had a tough 18 months or so, battling for the first team spot in the Championship and dropping out of the England set up. However a move back to the Premier League was impossible to turn down, but rejecting Liverpool was a different kettle of fish. The Reds wanted a back up goalkeeper for Simon Mignolet after allowing Pepe Reina to leave and so approached up and coming McCarthy to fill the role. However the 24-year-old wanted game time and so Loftus Road was the more viable choice. âAt this moment in time, I think I made the right decision,â McCarthy told Sky Sports. âObviously Liverpool historically are a massive club, but I wanted to go with QPR. I feel like Iâm going to play more here and that was the reason. âThe first thing is to get back playing again and put myself in the position to get put forward for England. âI want to be at the top for as many years as can, like Rob Green. Heâs had an unbelievable career and is still playing now. Heâs in great shape. I want to follow in those footsteps.â
Good to see the lad doesn't acknowledge any perceived pecking order. The jersey should be yours until the other guys wins it off you and so he will have to bide his time but I think he's made the right choice - ata club like Liverpool, you could wait for your chance and then a new guy gets moved in ahead of you (note to self, we've done that a few times too...).
