The news comes as manager Mark Hughes looks to improve his sides leaky defence for next season, with the Hoops shipping an average of two goals a game last term, as they finished just above the relegation zone.
Hughes has already strengthened the backline with deals for England international goalkeeper Robert Green and the experienced Ryan Nelsen, while talented Brazil defender Fabio has arrived on a season-long loan from Manchester United.
But QPR are not stopping there, and want to improve their left-back options by snapping up one of Gabriel Heinze or Kieran Richardson.

Sunderland's Kieran Richardson is the preferred target
Richardson is the preferred target, and has been told he can leave Sunderland for £2 million, but QPR face signifcant competition from West Ham for his signature, and are readying alternatives.
Blackburn full-back Martin Olsson is one long-term option, but Hughes is leaning towards Roma's vastly experienced former Argentina defender Gabriel Heinze - who can also play centre back.
Heinze has been told he can leave Roma for a nominal fee this summer by new coach Zdenek Zeman, and QPR have opened talks with his representatives over a one-year deal.
QPR have also shown an interest in free agent Poland international Sebastian Boenisch, but he is close to securing a move to Stoke City.
