QPR defender vows to put club off buying Tottenham or Newcastle players 09:34, 15 July 2015 By Paul Warburton Darnell determined to make Rangers starting XI QPR off buying another right-back by playing out of his skin pre-season. The teenager wants the slot for himself to kick-on from a baptism of fire in the Premier League last year. Even though Rs are eyeing up Ryan Taylor at Newcastle and Ryan Fredericks at Spurs, Furs reckons this could be his season. The son of Rs legend Paul, the 18-year-old reckons the Championship offers him better opportunities to develop than getting a hard time from the likes of Yannick Bolasie at Crystal Palace in March. That was then, this is now, and now is when Furlong believes he can make his mark. The youngster featured in both pre-season games so far, including a narrow defeat to Champions League Monaco last night in Italy. “I’ve got try and earn a place in the team now or in the future,” he said. “I hope this is my season. The Premier League’s a much harder league, but the Championship’s no mess around either. “I’m not bothered about the physicality. You come across the same in the U21s. It’s more about the speed of the game and I hope it benefits me being young.” Action Images please log in to view this image Debut: Furlong in action against Hull Furlong still lives at home in a house where football chat is 24/7, and unsurprisingly cites his dad who played 171 games for QPR in the ‘noughties’ as a massive influence, and one who keeps junior’s feet planted firmly on the ground. “The best bit of advice he gave me was to be humble and respect the opportunity that’s come - not just for those games last season - but since I was young,” Darnell added “He’s done it before, and he gives me a little pointers. “I live at home. It’s all I’ve ever known so it’s no different to me. I have a little sister and my mum’s begging she doesn’t get into it as well.” The one drawback it seems is being the second ‘Furs’ in Rs world. Darnell added: “It feels a bit weird being called Furs, because my dad was called that before me.”
People may disagree but I liked what I saw from Furlong and he's meant to be extremely rated by the youth coaches. At Hull with ten men and backs to the wall at times he didn't look at all out of his depth. For half an hour or so Sanchez and Cazorla murdered him but no shame in that really. First half of that game he was good from memory. Palace he was up against Bolasie which is bloody hard. What really made it an impossible task was the sheer laziness of SWP ahead of him absolutely refusing to do any defensive work with a youth player getting skinned 2-on-1 behind him. A fitting tribute to his QPR career. Not saying he's necessarily good enough but if they've shipped out Harriman again they must think he's up to it for at least a bench place. Potentially a back-up wide midfielder too.
Good attitude on the lad, it would be nice to see one of our own solidify a place in the starting XI. The song writes itself....
It was sung at Hull. Cracking day that in spite of Barton and Green's stupidity. Green made the save of his life about ten seconds before the winning goal which was even more gutting.
I disagree mate. I thought he was well out of his depth. It was partly his fault we went down to 10 men in the first place by showboating, losing the ball and then having to clean the guy out of it which Barton then got involved in. Their winner was also primarily his fault as he didn't go near the crosser. He was roasted alive at Palace and against Spurs (or Arsenal?) he was mugged for the opener. That don't mean he can't improve. He showed a bit of potential and he'll be playing at a much inferior level so its possible he could find his feet.
I think it's a bit of a stretch to blame the young full-back for the supposed team captain and 30+ stalwart midfielder getting himself petulantly sent off. He did get roasted against Arsenal for 30-40 mins but Sanchez is genuinely world-class. The best full-backs in the world would want to play against him. The Palace game I don't think anyone could have looked good at right-back. Wright-Phillips was a complete pisstake all day standing on the wing without a care in the world while Furlong tried to do both their jobs. It was a scandalous abdication of responsibility from a senior player. Maybe it comes across differently on streams and that's not meant as a dig but you do get a wider overall view of the match from the stands.
Well I didn't, did I? I said he was partly at fault, which he was. A more experienced player wouldn't have tried the silly flick he did which resulted in the tackle. Barton's sending off was his own fault but the situation wouldn't have arisen if Furlong wasn't showboating in such a crucial game. His inexperience did not help that day. Furlong was roasted a number of times last season which is why Ramsey dropped him. He realised he'd made a mistake but I don't blame the Manager for trying something different when everything else had failed up to that point anyway. On his performances last season he won't make a player but because he's young he could have learned and hopefully will improve at a more agreeable level like the Championsh*t. (The Palace game was on Sky btw )
I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. I don't remember any attempt at showboating but I don't think you can point any blame at Furlong for Barton's red card. How far back do you go? Did one of Caulker's 100 stray passes that day contribute or Sandro going off injured (probably, don't even remember)? It's not like Barton clattered Huddlestone after a Furlong error. It was violent conduct completely avoidable and disgraceful from the most inexperienced of players let alone an egomaniac who's been there so many times before. Did Ramsey drop him? Much more senior players including a supposed international and £10m right-back were competing for his spot. To get in the first XI at all was an achievement and I stick by the views of those inside the club who think he's good enough. Harriman seems the better player for the very limited amount I've seen of both but he must have been shipped out for a reason having just signed a 1 year contract.
Ramsey dropped him. He wasn't in the team after Palace as far as I can remember. He protected him. I think he realised at that point that he'd chucked the kid in at the deep end and the roastings he was receiving were damaging him. It was the right thing to do at that point. He'd made a mistake with him and didn't want the lad suffering any further damage. He most certainly can make a player. Lots of improvement required
QPR defender vows to put club off buying Tottenham or Newcastle players... So it's still OK for us to buy players from any of the other clubs then...
