QPR defender makes vow over future

Ryan NelsenRYAN Nelsen insists he's got no plans to hang up his boots and wants to carry on playing at the top level for as long as possible.

The veteran QPR defender turns 35 next month but rolled back the years with a man-of-the-match display to shut out Fernando Torres and Chelsea last weekend.

Nelsen only has a deal until the end of the season, but the New Zealander says he's got no plans to retire any time soon.

He said: “I don't know [how long I can carry on]. I'll just keep on going because I feel pretty good.

“I feel better than I did a few years ago because I've worked really hard on my fitness. I'm so lucky to, at my age, be playing at the highest level. I don't take anything for granted and everything is a bonus.

“I always have done extra bits [of work]. I love keeping fit and working. I enjoy it so I just go at it and hopefully it helps me in the long run.”

Good lad is Ryan Nelsen. I spoke to him after the open training session, he said he was genuinely pleased to be here and was looking forward to playing regular football again with us.

Along with AJ you got the sense that they were both really enthusiastic about being at the club and weren't just dishing out token sound bites. Shame about AJ though, he would of been one of the crowds favourites with his character and enthusiasm.

I'd expect Nelsen will be the same.

I wish he would retire from international football though
When there is so much travelling for him at his age it does not make sense to me

That is part of what makes him so good, he still wants to play every game. If he continues as he has he can play as long as he likes, no substitute for the right attitude...

    QPR boss reveals Nelsen regret

‘I only wish he was 10 years younger’, says Hughes after centre-back gives Torres nightmare

Mark Hughes paid tribute to Ryan Nelsen after the veteran defender’s towering performance over Chelsea’s Fernando Torres during Saturday’s goalless west London derby.

Nelsen had managed just one training session with the Rs after flying back to London on Thursday, having helped New Zealand to a World Cup qualifying win over the Solomon Islands 24 hours previously.

But the 34-year-old at times rendered Torres anonymous, restricting the Spain striker to a single first-half turn and shot as Rangers held their own to secure a point against the European champions.

Hughes, who signed Nelsen during the summer, insisted he was unsurprised by his display, and admitted his only regret was that the defender was not 10 years younger.

“I thought Ryan Nelsen was great. Because we expect him to bang out good performances like that sometimes we don’t give him the credit that he deserves,” said Hughes.

“You know what you’re going to get from him; a consistent level of performance. Torres is a striker of world renowned and he really dominated him.

“Given the week that he’s had it’s a credit to him and how he prepares. I think he [Torres] was frustrated because he was finding it very difficult to have an impact. That’s a credit to Ryan.

“He’s 35 years of age - the only shame is that he’s not 25. Maybe he wouldn’t be playing for us if he was 25. He [Torres] will have better days than he did today, but that was a credit to my centre-half.

“I had to make sure he was fit and well and ready for Premier League games. He came back from the Olympics so I had to be careful. Once he had a couple of weeks training I knew he was ready.”
