Warnock tells Wright-Phillips to concentrate on QPR

Neil Warnock has told Shaun Wright-Phillips to focus on his form for QPR this season rather than earning an England recall, but still believes the winger can reignite his international career.

Wright-Phillips enjoyed an impressive debut for the Rs against Newcastle United on Monday night after his move from Manchester City before the summer transfer window closed.

The 29-year-old still harbours hopes of winning back his place in the England squad ahead of next summer’s European Championship, despite not featuring for his country since the qualifier against Macedonia almost a year ago.

But Warnock insists Wright-Phillips’ first priority must be to perform regularly for QPR, and even suggested he may have to wait for Fabio Capello to leave before earning his next international cap.

“I think Shaun’s got to play football really,” said Warnock. “Shaun should just concentrate on QPR this year, and wait until the manager’s gone for England and start afresh, I think everybody will be given a clean bill of health when Capello leaves.

“Before then he’s just got to maintain the form and the fitness. It’s great to say he had a great game the other night but he’s got to do that on a regular basis.

“I’ve said to him ‘don’t go looking for [an England call-up], just carry on enjoying your game’. People can’t stop but look at him when he’s in full flight, he’s wonderful to see.

“He’s told me that anyway, he’d love to make the England squad, that’s his ambition.”
