Harry fears more injuries and wants to to add to USA international's deal

QPR are to extend Oguchi Onyewu’s contract even though the defender has yet to set foot on a first-team pitch.

The USA international was initially signed on a three-month deal as cover for Nedum Onuoha, but boss Harry Redknapp is worried history will repeat itself and leave him short of players.

He said: “When I was at Portsmouth the year I was in the Championship I had four centre halves.

“In just over two weeks I lost all four of them and I had to play the two full-backs as centre halves so I need cover.”

Even though the recovered Onuoha and Niko Kranjcar returned in the 1-1 draw at Reading on Saturday, Rangers lost Jermaine Jenas and Richard Dunne in the same breath.

Midfielders Alejandro Faurlin and Tom Carroll are likewise sidelined that leaves the manager reaching for a new contract form.

“He’s (Onyewu) a good lad and there are so many games coming so you never know with injury,” said Redknapp.

“You lose Tom and Ale and that’s how it can go.”
