QPR boss admits Wright-Phillips is sacrificing his natural game - QPR - London 24 Shaun Wright-Phillips QPR boss admits Wright-Phillips is sacrificing his natural game Ian Cooper Tuesday, December 13, 2011 12:00 PM Warnock insists he is happy with midfielderâs performances this season Neil Warnock admits Shaun Wright-Phillips is 'desperate' to score his first QPR goal, but concedes the winger is being forced to sacrifice his attacking instincts in order to help out his defence. After a flying start to his QPR career Wright-Phillips has struggled to make an impact in recent matches, playing in a variety of positions across the midfield but so far failing to find the net. The former Chelsea and Manchester City man came in for criticism again after another indifferent display in QPR's 1-0 defeat at Liverpool on Saturday, but Warnock insists that Wright-Phillips' defensive duties mean he is having to curb his natural attacking game. "I've been quite happy with Shaun, he's probably being doing a bit more work on the defensive side. On Saturday when we were getting over-run at times he had to go back into central midfield," Warnock told London24.com. "He's helping the team and that's probably taking a bit off his own game. Some games, especially when you're playing the top sides, you have to help the team and do what's needed, and I think he's been doing that really. "Him and Jamie Mackie are both desperate for a goal, and I think if one scores then they'll get a few more, it's just getting that first one over the line." And Warnock insists the 30-year-old is comfortable playing in a 'free role' behind the Rangers attack. "He likes the free role, he played there a lot at Manchester City and he enjoyed it. I'm not asking him to do something that he doesn't know how to do," added Warnock. "At the moment he's working hard for the team. It's taking a bit off his forward play but he's helping the team." Yeh, thought he did well defensively too, and seemed to work realy hard. He got lucky he didn't open his account with us at the wrong end though...
@QPRTimes George Ian Cooper #QPR Regarding that SWP story, merely reinforced my belief that an attacking mf will be Warnock's top priority in January. @QPRTimes George Ian Cooper #QPR Regardless of what he says, I'm not sure NW sees SWP as able to play in the free role, but without Adel Taarabt has had limited options
It was mentioned in another thread by a few of us that we would like to see SWP play in the free role beind the striker. Think he needs a little bit of shooting practice as a couple of his efforts (except for the disallowed goal) have been very wayward recently. But if his goals in pre-season for Man City are anything to go by, we're due a couple of screamers from him.
SWP out to derail United Winger confident of causing Loftus Road shock By Pete O'Rourke - Follow me: @skysportspeteo. Last Updated: December 13, 2011 2:03pm Premier League new boys QPR have already beaten Chelsea at Loftus Road this season and Wright-Phillips is hoping to repeat the trick against United. Neil Warnock's men have performed well against the Premier League's big boys and Wright-Phillips admits they are striving for consistency. "It's a massive game to play in and we are looking forward to it and hopefully we can do the same thing we did to Chelsea and move further up the table again," Wright-Phillips told Sky Sports News. "I think we have done really well against the big clubs and I think we have got to keep doing that on a consistent basis and I think as a footballer the hardest point is consistently performing as a team." iReader
What planet is this guy on? We may have beaten Chelsea yes but we have lost against City, Liverpool and Spurs. Admittedly we played very well against City but were battered by Liverpool and for one half by Spurs. Also, he is someone to talk about consistency. Consistently under-performing is our SWP.
@QPRTimes George Ian Cooper #QPR Regardless of what he says, I'm not sure NW sees SWP as able to play in the free role, but without Adel Taarabt has had limited options[/QUOTE] ****ing play him then!!
I think the only way we're going to get something on sunday is by getting the ball in the box as much as possible which means SWP on the right, Traore on the left and then Helguson and Bothroyd competing with whichever centre-halves United pick, but if Evans is trying to win headers against HH I fancy our chances of nicking a goal or two.
Agreed, we must give it a go like we did against City and not sit back like we did against Liverpool, we are at home after all. Also, up to the fans to make it a cauldron just like against Chelsea.
Please no repeat of the Liverpool game. Let's give it a go like against City. Although maybe it would be better to save energy for the Sunderland game.
Makes you wonder at times doesn't it? Is the side missing Adel Taarabt? Taarabt would find SWP in a blink of an eye ... Only played our two best passes of the season in the Chelsea game . Wannock needs to have a long look in the mirror as creative Baron is about as creative as Vinnie Jonez was
DT, you are right, I have finally seen the light! We are definitely lacking creativity and imagination. If we don't keep Adel and get him playing to his full potential we will have to buy this in soon, and these types of players are the hardest to 'gel' as you have to build the style around them. I am happy that we are still trying to play passing football, but a bit worried that Warnock will be satisfied with a hard working pass and run team. I want to be watching them try to be the 70s Dutch team..... The other thing we seem short of is the 'telepathic understanding' between pairs of players who just know what the other is going to do - Bowles and Francis, your namesake and both Dave Clements and Ian Gillard, Roeder and Fenwick at their best. Best potential for this seems to be Young and SWP, but we rarely play Shaun on the right. Most important one would be Ali/ creative midfielder .....
