The 20-year-old completed his move to the Lions on Monday and made his first League appearance for the south Londoners during their defeat to Cardiff City on Tuesday. âSince the start of the season while the transfer window was open I was trying to see what options were out there as it didnât look as if I had a chance at West Brom,â Wood said. âThere were a few enquiries about me but nothing permanent. It came while I was away on international duty. âAs soon as I came back I jumped on the phone and knew that was what I wanted to do.â The striker talked about a possible move with fellow New Zealand international and QPR defender Ryan Nelsen as well as former Lions goalkeeper Ryan Allsop. âI always speak to Nelly and those type of lads about whatâs it like,â he added. âTheyâve lived in London and I wanted to hear what their side of the story. I know Ryan Allsop was here this time last year. âI gave him a call and he told me what it was all about.â The move represents something of a return home for Wood, whose mother grew up in nearby Lewisham before moving to New Zealand. âI know a lot about the club,â the striker explained. âMy Mum was born and raised in Lewisham and I know how entertaining it can be at times. âMy Mum left when she was 22 so Iâve only set foot here a couple of times before.â Despite only arriving at the club on Monday, Wood already feels as if he has settled in. âTheyâve all been brilliant,â he added. âFrom the first minute that I walked into the training ground. âIt was nice to get out on the pitch after the first day.â
