Aston Villa boss Alex McLeish is hopeful Jermaine Jenas will be fit for Sunday's clash with Queens Park Rangers while striker Derren Bent is declared "50-50".

The on-loan midfielder suffered a strain prior to Villa's Everton fixture but has made encouraging progress in recent days fuelling quiet optimism from the manager.

Comparatively, Bent who incurred a late groin injury against Newcastle last Saturday is unlikely to feature, joining the injury list along with fellow forward, Emile Heskey.

Speaking to the official Villa website McLeish said: "We have been working with Jermaine on the training ground over the last few days and, touch wood, he's available for the weekend.

"But we're not committing ourselves 100 per cent to that.

"We could be doing with the competition.

"Emile isn't quite ready and Darren is not as bad as first feared.

"He's touch and go for the weekend. He's, at this stage, 50-50."

Having won just one of their opening five league games the Lions look to pick up a win against new boys QPR who currently equal Villa's points tally.

Gutted Heskey isn't playing, they might score a goal now.

This is the 21st Century, and if Darren Bent is declaring himself 50-50, I won't hear a word said against him

    Bannan Vows QPR Reaction

Barry Bannan has vowed his Aston Villa team-mates will bounce back from the home defeat against Bolton Wanderers

The Villains crashed out of the Carling Cup courtesy of second half strikers from Chris Eagles and Gael Kakuta.

Boss Alex McLeish held an hour long inquest with senior players following the home defeat to pick the bones of a disappointing cup exit.

Speaking to AVFC.co.uk, the young Scotsman believes that lessons such as these should be taken into Sunday's Sky televised clash.

'We're out of the cup now and it's vital we now look forward and aim to bounce back, starting on Sunday against QPR,' he said.

'I didn't think my own performance was anywhere near good enough on the night.
'I am going to work really hard in training and hopefully I'll get the chance again on Sunday.

'We, as a group, have the character and ability to bounce back.

'You look around the changing room and there's a great bunch of players in there who are looking to shine now.'

The Scottish international has made six appearances this term for McLeish's Villa.

It's also a Sky Sports Free Weekend - so anyone with Sky that can't get to the game can watch it on the telly, whether you pay for the Sports packages or not!!

QPR striker DJ Campbell has no regrets over Aston Villa exit - QPR FC - Sport - Fulham Chronicle

DJ Campbell insists there's no bad feeling towards Aston Villa ahead of facing his former club on Sunday.

The QPR striker spent a spell at Villa Park as a YTS, before dropping into the non-league game with Chesham, Stevenage, Billericay and Yeading.

But the Hammersmith-born hitman insists he has no regrets about how things worked out in the Midlands.

He said: "There's no bitterness towards them. I made some good friends there but maybe it wasn't my time.

“I've got no regrets and believe it's made me the person I am today and appreciate what I have.

“Going into non-league put things into perspective."

Rangers beat Villa to the 29-year-old's signature in the summer after both clubs triggered the £1.25million release clause in his Blackpool contract.

But the former Brentford and Birmingham frontman is delighted he chose to return to west London.

“This is the club I've supported all my life," he said.

“I was brought up five minutes from here and I used to watch the team play back in the days. It's good to switch things round now and have people coming to watch me play football."

Campbell is likely to start on the bench for the Loftus Road clash as he battles to overcome a viral infection.

And the striker admits he feared the worst when he was struck by the mystery bug before the Premier League opener against Bolton last month.

“I didn't know what it was," he added.

“I had a lot of belly pains and chest pains and it was worrying because I had loads of scans and tests. Thankfully it was only a viral infection.

“I'm still not 100 per cent. I'm feeling stronger and scoring against Wolves made me feel a lot better!"

Young lifts lid on Villa hell under Houllier | Radio talkSPORT

QPR defender Luke Young admits life at Aston Villa under Gerard Houllier was hell last season as he prepares to face his former club for the first time.

The England international left Villa Park for Loftus Road at the end of the transfer window after a horrendous season which saw the Midlands giants fighting to avoid relegation.

Young admits he is delighted to have left the Villa nightmare behind and is much happier being part of Neil Warnock's QPR revolution.

    “
It was one of the least enjoyable seasons I've had in football
    ”
    Luke Young
"It was one of the least enjoyable seasons I've had in football," said the 32-year-old. "Two years before that we were right up there in fourth or fifth come March time and were trying to push on and finish in the Champions League, which seems quite ridiculous now with what happened last season.

"Was Houllier like a school teacher? Yes, it was a little bit like that. You always felt you were getting judged on what extra work you were doing and weren't doing.

"It was: 'Are you in the gym doing your extra work, or are you not?' - so yes, it was a little bit like that [a school teacher] at times.

"Perhaps the new manager came in and tried to change a lot of things in quite a short space of time.

"A few things went on that weren't great. It was a long, hard season and in the end we were really relieved to finish ninth. It seemed a little bit of a false position because it wasn't a great season."

Aston Villa have recalled Andreas Weimann from his loan spell at Watford.

The 20-year-old striker was set to be at Vicarage Road until early January, but Villa had the right to terminate the deal after 28 days.

The Premier League side could be light in attack for this weekend's clash with QPR, with Darren Bent and Emile Heskey both facing late fitness tests.

Weimann, in his second loan spell at the Hornets, started all of Watford's last three games.

The Austria Under-21 international failed to find the net during his latest stint, but scored four goals in 19 games during a five-month stay in Hertfordshire last season.
