Tony Pulis has revealed how his mates in management told him not to touch Jermaine Pennant.

They warned Stoke’s boss the former Liverpool and Birmingham winger – who has turned out to be the club’s signing of the season – was too lazy for the Premier League.

Instead the 28-year-old has been a revelation, and Pulis wants more from him in the final match of the season against relegation-threatened Wigan today.

He said: “Jermaine has taken the bit between his teeth like the rest of them, and it has been fantastic to see that from a player who people told me was quite lazy. Don’t get me wrong. He has got a lot more to do before he can start putting his feet under the table and thinking he’s a big hitter in the Premier League again.

“But the last three months he’s recognised and realised what we’re all about. He’s picked the baton up and got on with it and looks a better player for it.’’
