No great surprise. Pulis has tried to sign him in the past. We nearly got him for £600k I seem to remember but the Icelandics refused to cough up the cash.

STOKE City manager Tony Pulis is keeping a close eye on Peter Crouch's potential availability at Tottenham.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp looks set to try to offload the 30-year-old England striker as part of a summer revamp at White Hart Lane.

And Pulis, a long-time admirer of Macclesfield-born Crouch, would be prepared to wait until the end of the August transfer window if needs be to get his man.

Pulis, who wants to bring in at least one new striker before the August 31 deadline, has already seen attempts to sign West Ham's Carlton Cole and Birmingham's Cameron Jerome hit potentially fatal hitches over personal terms.

The 6ft 7ins Crouch has generated more than £30m in transfers to the likes of Liverpool, Portsmouth and Spurs over the last decade, but a current asking price of well below £10m would fall within Stoke's reach.

And Stoke could accommodate his salary within their wage structure by agreeing a higher transfer fee so Tottenham could then pay off part of his remaining contract with them.

Crouch started just 20 Premier League games last season, but was deployed more regularly in the Champions League with 10 full appearances in Europe.

Pulis would love to secure Crouch's goalscoring threat, and has never struggled to do business with his old mentor Redknapp.

Chairman Peter Coates declined to comment on new targets, but doesn't necessarily think the Cole and Jerome deals are completely dead.

With Stoke selling Tuncay for £4.5m in January, offloading his replacement John Carew since the end of the season, and having Ricardo Fuller and Mama Sidibe injured long-term, Coates acknowledged that at least one new striker remained a priority for Pulis, pictured below.

"Yes, we would expect that to happen," he said. "We are confident we will be able to improve the squad before the deadline.

"We are working on a few things, but football is a messy business and these things take time."

Coates will have a briefing with Pulis tomorrow to discuss their on-going transfer strategy.

Stoke's squad returned to training today after enjoying a golf day in South Wales following their back-to-back friendlies in Newport over the weekend.

I said this in another post - fantastic striker and he's english. Everytime he's played anywhere he looks good - it's just amazing a player so tall isn't so good with his head! Although he'd be perfect with delap!

Quality player and although in my opinion he can hold the ball up better and bring wingers into the game better than KJ he is more of the same! However, If we started the season with Crouch and Defoe and KJ and Walters as rotation and back up, I would be very happy! That would be a top quality strike force, pace and size and would suit or wingers very well!

I have to say i would be over the moon if we signed Crouchie so that we can put the Cole and Jerome rumours finally to bed!

  6. Agree Waddo I would be over the moon too. Not sure you could say the same for KJ. It would be interesting playing Crouch IF he came with Pennant, Matty and Walters. For me Crouch works hard and although not great in the air he causes such chaos. Not bad on the line with his hads either!

  7. Agreed Cris, Crouch is quality and surprisingly good with his feet considering his size. Would be a good signing me thinks. Is Defoe a possibility then boys? Quality player too.

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/fo...Stoke-want-sign-Tottenhams-Peter-Crouch.html?

Stoke manager Tony Pulis is launching a £10million bid for Tottenham’s Peter Crouch as he attempts to land an experienced Premier League striker.
Pulis has missed out on West Ham’s Carlton Cole and seen talks over Birmingham’s Cameron Jerome stall.

Stoke are understood to have failed to match wage demands in both instances and will have to rethink if they are to sign Crouch, who is on around £70,000 a week. Tottenham remain interested in Manchester City’s Emmanuel Adebayor.
Crouch, 30, is reluctant to leave Tottenham, particularly for a club outside the top six.

Stoke have not given up on Birmingham defender Scott Dann despite signing Jonathan Woodgate from Spurs.
Dann, 24, was close to a £12m move but could not agree terms. Everton and Aston Villa are also interested.
