Man Utd v Liverpool: Dog & Duck v The Red Lion - Gary Neville

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville says his ex-club's game against Liverpool on Sunday could be "like the Dog and Duck versus The Red Lion".

Neville, while working for Sky Sports, likened the fixture to a pub game.

He also claimed the Red Devils "got away with murder" in an unconvincing 2-1 win at Southampton on Monday.

"He can say everything as he is an ex-legend, but as an ex-legend, or legend, you have to know what you are saying," said United boss Louis Van Gaal.

"He has to pay attention to his words."

However, Neville denied any talk of a rift between him and Van Gaal.

He was asked on Twitter: "The press mentioning a feud between yourself and Van Gaal. What feud?"

And Neville responded: "One that will be created that doesn't exist."

Van Gaal conceded his team were "lucky" to beat Southampton as they registered a fifth league win on the trot.

The win moved United to third in the Premier League going into the game against fierce rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford.

The Reds are ninth in the table as they have struggled to match their exploits from last season when they finished second.

It's true - both teams are seriously average. Difference is, United have star quality up front which can win matches.

    We have Lambert.

Think it's psychological as well. United had it in abundance under Fergie, lost it under Moyes, and now van Gaal's giving it back to them. No matter how bad they are, or how bad they're playing, they'll still expect the three points. And will often get them.

We haven't had it for years. As Carragher has pointed out, we're mentally weak.

it is a well known topic that when neville was at old trafford that van gaal insulted him by saying "you are not the manager yet" there is clearly no love at all between neville and the current utd management.

Jimmy is right though.... pub? well we do have lambert so maybe it will be a bit of a pub game seeing utd have felliani and of course their 7/9 injured defenders.

Don't forget the star quality between the sticks, who stops us throwing matches away like confetti no matter how hard the back 3/4/5 try <ok>

Good shout - top class keeper who will get better.

Unfortunately for you, I do think he'll be going to Real Madrid once Casillas calls it a day.

  11. De Gea won't join Real Madrid. He's a A.Madrid fan, is like Robbie Fowler, Steven Gerrard or Jamie Carragher signing for Man Utd after going to Sampdoria!

I wouldn't be surprised mate. Are you sure he's an Atleti fan? Yes, he played for them, but not sure if he has any real ties.

you sure, similar sort of argument was used for torres never going there, i reckon they would if they came calling to be honest, biggest club in europe if not world to play for, be hard to resist.

i don't buy the rivalry argument, although i can only speak from uk point of view.

  14. Never say never but it's very unlikely.

Jimmy, he was a boyhood A.Madrid fan.

Jenners, I didn't think Torres would but he did go to Chelsea from us. Slightly different as Torres wasn't a boyhood Liverpool fan though

Doubt it - they signed Claudio Bravo who will play now until Ter Stegen develops.

think there is a lot more to that than we know or ever will to be honest, ie offer too good to refuse on a player lacking form so told to do one type thing (not torres fault we wasted the money is it lol)

i get the impression that utd think they have the next schmeichel so will want to keep at all costs, and suppose it does look promising he may become a great goalie, so be a good test for the player then if real come in for him if the atletico thing is there. he's already at a big club though isnt he, so does he really need to move.

Yep, that's the one we are swapping for Bale in the summer.

    Gotta love the tabs <ok>

Tbh I wouldn't mind if De Gea went, as apparently the whole shebang would see Real swap Bale for De Gea in order to raise the cash to buy Aguero. That would cripple City far worse than it hurt us, although that does assume the complex web of lies, intrigue and mystery isn't just made up BS.

  19. But you'd need to buy a whole defence as well as a keeper to replace him :)
