… and in a moment of contrition, I considered writing a letter to Kit

    Dear Sir,

During last night’s match I moaned (quite a few times actually) that Hyndman, Kavanagh and Cole ought to be brought off the bench. However the one main substitution (Bodurov for Ream doesn’t count in this context) that you made - Cairney for Kaca - was a revelation. We stepped up a gear from that point and played some great football. More importantly, fans could see the much needed confidence level soar throughout the team.

So I was wrong and you were right, Mr Symons.

A wee bit of me is still rueful however. Sean Kavanagh and Larnell Cole, as well as needing game time, would have been an improvement on Voser and the hapless Kaca (so far as the game was panning out early in the second half anyway). Also, what now seems as a token gesture, naming Emerson Hyndman on the bench will I fear, only harden his resolve to leave - and his body language during the half time warm up didn’t suggest anything different.

Again, on this occasion and in hindsight, I bow to you, Sir. However, I’m not quite convinced that your strategy (sic) of ‘ignoring’ the youngsters won’t be re-visited.

    Yours etc,
