Once again it seems we are shamed by our Countrymen.

With all the publicity surrounding the Magaluff girl and the
general behaviour of some Brits abroard I do wonder what
the rest of the world really think of us.

It is a shameful act, theft of any sort is, but as the article says, a Swede was plotting to nick the sign. The odd thieving knob head is not representative of me or the majority of the UK. Just as it isn't of Sweden.
The many great brits who travel abroad will dispel in my opinion any notions that all brits are uncouth houdlems. The problem is these sort of resorts like Magaluf or Kavos where an atmosphere and culture has been building from as much as anything the local bar and hotel owners and the people who are then attracted to that culture.
The locals want the tourist dollar but they got caught in a race to appeal whilst not really questioning their methods of trying to appeal. As much as Magaluf is trying to clean up, there are tens of resorts that will rub their grubby palms at the thought of getting those customers. Will their new found principles stand up to reduced takings, empty bars and less vunerable girls to take advantage of? I'm not to sure?

    Bah!

Not excusing it but our media do like to give the population a bad rep some of which is deserved, I'll agree that a lot of British tourists can be aggressive but in comparison to some of the **** Chinese and Russian tourists pull it's the tip of the iceberg.

The resorts in the Mediterranean are like an evolution of the British sea resort holiday to Blackpool but with guaranteed sun. It's essentially a British high street in a Spanish or Greek resort town.

This is an excellent article about British tourism in these resorts.

I have been there twice actually and It is a harrowing experience.

These kids found stuff on the floor and walked out with it. There's loads of things laying around there, especially where the ash pit is and the partly demolished ovens. Everything from teeth to bone fragments.

They were stupid, but they are kids and let's not forget that.

    I've been there too KEMP.

It was middle of February as well so the whole place was covered in snow.

    It's a truly eerie place.

Never been there, but would love to go. I have been to Belsen a few times, and that is a very eerie place.
    Very harrowing and haunting.

Well it is reassuring to see that in the international race to plummet the depths of depravity we are in there with a shout. Good old UK.

Condemning the whole of the UK is no better than condemning all Muslims over the actions of a very small percentage! <doh>

You'd think pulling holes in every post would become boring, but apparently not.

It's just part of the general malaise that seems to permeate every part of modern life. Not to say that it wouldn't have happened in the past. In fact come to think of it this place was partly set up to nick the gold fillings from people's teeth. They even made a few Marks on the side my rendering them down to make soap.

Why is it only our youngsters, perhaps just a minority, think that to have a good time they have to get slaughtered, make themselves a general nuisance, vomit all over the place and then fight with fists, at best, or knives at worst. We have Prince of Wales Road and most towns and Cities in our Country have a Prince of Wales Road. I have been fortunate to extensively travel the World and I cannot recall any City in any other Country that has a Prince of Wales Road unless it is a place that has attracted the Brits as tourists and then all hell breaks loose!! And then the rest of us condone it. They are only young, a bit high spirited, having a good time etc etc. Concentration Camp sites are, in my opinion, sacred places as is the mountain in Malaysia. I just wonder what the reaction would be if a group of visiting Muslims went into Westminster Abbey, stripped stark bollock naked for selfies, crapped in the pulpit and then abused staff trying to stop them or if a group of German students went into the Military Garden of Remembrance in Shropshire and nicked a couple of name plaques for souvenirs. If the natural reaction of anybody considering those scenarios is ' it wouldn't bother me ' then it just indicates how degenerate as a nation we have become. Proud to be British - no I'm not!

Generally agree 1950 but you've clearly never been to Hamburg. I ended up in the Reeperbahm on a Friday night and witnessed two gangs of transvestites fighting a running street battle, pools of vomit and the salubrious sight of women relieving themselves in the street. Honestly, it made POW Rd look a bit classy. I have to say Prague post 2000 also seems to have deteriorated markedly in terms of public behaviour although this is largely due to British stag and hen parties to be fair.

I think that most cities have dodgy areas but that mostly if you don't look for them you don't find them and I can't imagine that you, like me, spend a lot of time looking for the club scene in any of the places you go to.

Personally part of my filter for picking places to go sadly is where there are generally not many Brits so that when I arrive the locals don't already have an inbuilt contempt for me. Take Valencia over Barcelona - both wonderful cities but the people of Valencia have always been hugely friendly to me whereas I found Barcelona to be a bit more cynical.

I have been to the classic Brit med getaways in my youth but would I go anywhere near them now? Definitely not. It is a real shame that (to be fair mostly younger) Brits abroad seem largely incapable of behaving with any decorum or more importantly respect for the locals. It seems to me that as soon as people leave the country they feel like they can do what they want. Horribly embarrassing for the rest of us who do try to behave well overseas.

it is just depressing that affordable overseas travel which is one of the great privileges we now enjoy and should be a way of learning about other places and cultures and frankly understanding their perspective has turned into lager-fuelled carnage.

I went to Auschwitz when I was 17 and it was truly harrowing. Why someone would want to steal from there is indescribable - I spent most of the visit deeply ashamed of humanity. It was deep winter when I was there and no birds sang, going into the gas chambers was atrocious and I shudder now just thinking about it. These boys should be ashamed of themselves.

Well, this has gone off on a tangent, hasn't it!

We're not talking about drink and drug-fuelled Brits in Los Cristianos, just a couple of (probably not too intelligent) kids being stupid in what is a sacred and hallowed place.

I certainly don't condone it, but I can understand how it may happen. When I was 17, I used to stagger home from the city centre and throw myself over peoples hedges into their gardens. Great craic!

It wasn't but it happened because I was 17 and stupid. Some perspective is required. 10 years in jail fuxake! Get a grip.
