Today is the sixth national Armed Forces Day in the United Kingdom, with this yearâs main celebrations being held in Sterling (sic). The day consists of a flyover (sic) of military aircrafts (sic), a simulated combat mission, tanks and other military vehicles alongside musical festivities billed as a fun family day out. Armed Forces Day is presented as an opportunity to appreciate veterans â but in reality normalizes (sic) militarism through the parading of military tanks, aircraft and combat techniques behind a charade of tokenistic thanks to veterans. This action highlights that such unbridled militarism does not go unnoticed. (by 4 women anyway) The action also occurs in the context of Glasgow being the city hosting the celebration of the commemoration of the beginning of WWI. 2014 marks the hundredth anniversary of the beginning of the First World War. Far from being a "war to end all wars" or a "victory for democracy", this was a military disaster and a human catastrophe. David Cameron plans to spend £55,000,000 on "truly national commemorations" to mark this anniversary. Cameron has inappropriately compared these to the "Diamond Jubilee celebrations" and stated that their aim will be to stress our "national spirit". One of the protesters, Angela D, says âWe find it repulsive that in a time of so-called âausterity,â where government cuts to benefits have put 200,000 additional children into poverty, that £55 million can be spent on one ceremony.' Another of the occupiers, Frida, has stated âWe are occupying the crane in protest of Armed Forces day â we object to the glorification of war and are here to make our voices heard.â
Family day out? Unadulterated indoctrination as per. Funny thing is you ****s would be making sketch shows about Kim Jong-un for doing this kind of ****.
Except North Korea actually is a Militaristic State. The UK is not and never has been. I don't honestly understand what their issue is, should we also cancel Rememberance Sunday because a few people object to the Armed Forces receiving thanks for the work they do?
Sweet suffering **** You have spent days debating God knows how many weapons of mass destruction within a stones throw of your own front door with Aldo.
And you have been bumming up th Ra in here for years . The other night you described your dead countrymen as eggs broken to make an omelette and now you're on this thread bemoaning militaristic jingoism and indoctrination Away ye go ya crackpot
On a website like this is the same as a military ****ing carnival billed as a family day out Lay off the turps Aldo.
Let's give them what they want and disarm totally, I mean it's not as if the UK has any enemies who would take advantage. It's such a great idea that i'm surprised no other country has thought of it before, or have they? Are there ANY countries in the world who don't have a Military?
Ironic though that they chose to stage their protest on top of a crane that was used to load anding craft and the machinery of war on to ships for DDay and unloaded millions of tonnes of lend lease military equipment from the USA all through WWII .
I must admit I don't really like the military parades and stuff - it's all a bit "Soviet" for my liking. Also Dev, I think it's easy to separate a Military parade lik this from Rememberance Day. I'll always respect the dead from the 2 world wars as I suspect the vast majoirty would.
I wouldn't take my family to one, in fact I haven't been to one since I was about 20. What you posted in the OP wasn't a parade anyway.
These people are not protesting against Armed Forces day Dan, they are against the Military in general. They are "Anti War" and according to these ****ing cretins we should have just sat out WWI and disbanded the Military completely, it's so ****ing monumentally ******ed an idea it beggars beleif that anyone could actually think it was an achievable aim.
Aye true, who would want to sit out a family ****ing feud were millions of poor bastards were sent to their deaths for what amounted to **** all?
And i've never been to any Armed Forces Day celebrations nor have I any intention to do so in future, but the fact remains the Armed Forces are not some shabby secret which should wear sack cloth and ashes, or be hidden away as if they have something to be ashamed of. Like it or not they are part of society and have every bit as much right to celebrate their history as any nutjob bunch of malcontents sitting up a crane.
