As I said on another thread, Brian Horton's problems, which thankfully he is clear of now, prompted me to go for a check-up in Saigon. As I said before, all was well, but the peace of mind it gave me was well worth it.
I'd strongly advise any bloke to get checked out asap even if it's just for peace of mind. I had a PSA test last year due to family history. Very quick and easy
Trouble is a PSA test is not that accurate an indicator as to whether you have cancer or not. Still I would do it. I did and it was bit high, and I was referred, and I have it. But then again my old man had it so it was odds on.
I had the PSA last year, no problems. I was worried, huge weight lifted….. BTW the blood test hasn’t replaced the manual prostrate check…it’s both! Not a pleasurable experience!!
last time I went the Doctor stuck his finger up and told me it was nice and round - think he needs to review how he tells people they're ok
They seem to discourage PSA testing in the over 70's. On the grounds that since you're only likely to have 10-15 years left anyway it probably wouldn't you kill you if you had it! I get the impression it's more about saving NHS resources than about detecting the condition, at least for the over 70's.
What's the age recommendation in the UK now for a test - I'm soon 55 and not heard anything from my doctor's office ... Are there signs you need to watch out for before getting a test if you've got it?
ha! Similar experience…the GP said that’s a lovely & smooth prostrate, would you mind if my trainee came in & had a feel so they know what to feel for….erm….yes I bloody do mind! I’m getting dressed
Definitely not the only way, but it's an indicator. I should have probably added that I also had the prostate check also
It's not an accurate indicator in a one off test but can be used in many cases to form a pattern over a certain period of time.If your PSA continues to rise over a period of say 1 year(due to 3 monthly tests),then you're more than likely to be referred to a Urologist for further investigation. In many cases it's BPH(enlargement). I was diagnosed with an enlarged prostate, the symptoms being more or less the same as something more serious.I now have a follow up examination and bloods on an annual basis, incase it turns into something more serious. My Father had Prostrate cancer which increases the risk so I don't mind getting a quick prod every year... Ultimately it could save my life!!
Last time I had one, the Dr had a hand on each shoulder!… or , another old one… the Dr explained what he was about to do. He then said he was going to start the procedure , followed by don’t get a hard on Dave. I said my names not Dave, he said no but mine is. coat?
Just had a close relative diagnosed with prostate cancer, his PSA test was in the normal range but he went to the doctors after the 6,7,8 times peeing a night bother. It's an aggressive cancer, but the good news is it's not spread and he's on hormone treatment and booked in for the op to remove his prostate. In his words 'I'm on **** street but the right side of **** street'. He's also full of praise for the NHS's speed, and care, of treatment.
Mine has been rising year on year (PSA result not the other thing, oooeeerr matron) and now my last result a week or so ago, it has dropped down significantly. WTF is that all about. Starting hormones this Wednesday. Treatment isn't that fast here in Leicestershire.
