Lulsgate is badly affected by fog at certain times of the year, and this is despite most aircraft that use it having the capability to land when there is zero visibility. I used to work in Paris and commuted weekly from Bristol, and at certain times of the year you would get delays at each end because of fog, as Charles De Gaulle airport is in the middle of the countryside some 25Km outside of Paris and is renowned for it
What a surprise! Should have developed Filton which has rail, motorway and local buses. But thanks to the NIMBYS it's going to be another housing estate.
Hard life was it then? Whatever did you do all weekend if you could not fly home on Friday? Not a lot to do there?
I'm sure I read somewhere that Bristol airport was built originally for the military to practice take off and landing in the fog - is that right?
No not really....it was very enjoyable. I was only based in Paris for a few months and spent the rest of the time in Grenoble and in Holland, Belgium and Poland. One flight out of Bristol was delayed for 2 hours and we then circled CDG for 90 minutes before being cleared to land. The only clue we'd landed was the slight bump on arrival. Other than that it was a white out and the reason we'd circled for so long was to allow the Transatlantic traffic to land that were all running low on fuel. I had to spend a whole weekend in CDG in the winter of 2003 as the airport was snowbound and the crew of my flight had exceeded their hours on the Friday. I lost a lot of French cheese I was bringing home and BA wouldn't reimburse me for it either. These were the days when BA (operating as BA Connect) had the near continent routes cornered and before Easy Jet and Ryan Air later took the market share. I still have my final ticket for the round trip in July 2004 which was a staggering £545.00 !!! All for a 45 minute each way flight !
My goodness you had all the bad luck with places to work - I spent two weeks holiday in Grenoble two summers ago and found walking up all the bloody "hills" surrounding a bit tiring. Most of my travelling was in Ireland both North and Republic, Holland, Belgium and Germany. My most exotic trip was the Dominican Republic - A day each way for the flights and two days in a Unilever warehouse checking 15 tonnes of packaging film in which we had used the wrong type of polythene in 50% of it. Never even saw a beach and the taxis are the scariest I've experienced anywhere. And all my friends and family thought I was so lucky to have a job with lots of foreign travel. No time for sightseeing when you are stuck in airports, trains, planes and cars is there.
This conversation does highlight that we'll talk about everything connected with Bristol and jack sh1t as we'll.
Gatwick is much more convenient for Crawley FC. It is only a couple of miles from Gatwick. I assume one can fly there from Lulsgate or does one need to change at Amsterdam?
When I started posting on this forum, one of the things I said was that non Bristol City football posts should be allowed(within reason) in an attempt to make this site more popular and increase its membership, from other Bristol City forums I am trying my best to get as many Bristol City and football related items on the board If there is only ONE new posting per day, then a forum is likely to die. I don't have a problem with anything be Bristol related, but I'll bide by the wishes of the Majority. Funny enough the fog at the airport posting has the highest number of viewings today
Tampa was bemused because he is so far away. You are just being daft suggesting you fly via Dublin. If our drunken fans went that route, they would never leave Dublin in any fit state to get to Crawley!
But according to Jack FM they now fly to New York and cheaper. That is interesting if you wanted to go to New York
