We all know the Binners have a bit of an inferiority complex with us and that's not going to change after today's result. On the whole we played pretty well and even the most die-hard of Ipswich fans couldn't dispute we were much the better team and fully deserved the 3 points. Michael Turner was my man of the match, absolute titanic performance from the big man as he dealt with every single one of the many long balls lumped forwards by the Ipswich defence/goalkeeper. Alex Tettey was also brilliant today especially in the tackle where he was simply excellent. It can't of helped that so early in the game we had to change things with Bennett's injury (and I already had concerns about our small squad) but Garrido had a very good game today and Russ also looked pretty comfortable. Johnson, Hoolahan, Grabban, Redmond and Lafferty all played to the same level as they did in our previous wins. They weren't as lively because we were away from home but Grabban still found the net (though he could have had the match ball in all three of his last games if we are being harsh). Mings seemed to have the better of Redmond for much of the game but he was still a useful outlet. My only concern is Whittaker; Ipswich's wingers are hardly the most dynamic yet he still was not convincing and his distribution was rather poor. If we do get back to the Premier League I feel we will need to upgrade here. I expected Ipswich would give us a much tougher game, but in the end aside from Daryl Murphy's miss they never really threatened us. They played dreadful hoofball for most of the game with only McGoldrick (whom I actually thought was superb) offering any real threat. Our fans were brilliant and Ipswich's fans gave a really poor show. As soon as we scored it was like a library in the home areas of Portman Road; I know they didn't have much to shout about but most fans at least get behind their team when they are trying to chase a game. On the basis of this performance we should be able to challenge for the play-offs at the very least whilst as for Ipswich, they look light years away from mounting a push to escape midtable mediocrity. Of course, it is very early days in the season but with the squad we have we should be making a good account of ourselves. As for Ipswich, there isn't much Mick can do; he is a good manager but the players he has at his disposal just don't seem good enough to me. Anyway enough of me talking. Top of the league! At Portman Road! Top of the league! At Portman Road!
Not much room to argue any of your points this week. Even the the McGoldrick bit I agree with, although far less of a threat in the 2nd half
I think if Bennett had played we would have been able to deal with their long ball threat even better. Really we should have had more with both Grabban and Lafferty having good chances. I still don't think the squad looks complete really and we have another week to make transfers and then the loan window as insurance. I would like to see a replacement for Leroy which seems to be coming and a right back. then so long as no one leaves were pretty much set.
agree about mcgoldrick,he looks half decent. whittaker is not the best, would rather see russ there. redmond is also poor. laffety looks good on the ball, but needs to improve in front of goal. grabben is the sort of player who will both score and miss a lot. but who cares today? we have won in the binners back yard, and re (as always) the pride of anglia!
