Steve Cotterill insists there will be no slacking off from promotion-chasing Preston North End.

The Lilywhites are already assured of a play-off place in Sky Bet League One, but automatic promotion looks a rank outside bet.

Preston could be excused for easing off and not risking players ahead of the end-of-season lottery, but City’s manager doesn’t anticipate that being the case at Ashton Gate tomorrow (3pm).

“They probably think they can still get automatic promotion,” Cotterill told Bristol City Player. “They will need to go on a good run and hope Brentford blow up - which I don’t think they will.

“I’m sure Simon will think Preston have a chance of going up, even via the play-offs, because they have had a very good season to be fair to them.

“There is a lot of professional pride. When you come up against any good English manager, everyone wants to win every week.

“Win, lose or draw we prepare our teams the same every week and I’m sure Simon is no different. We do our work on the opposition but we tend to focus on us more.

“There has only been one game, from start to finish, where we haven’t been any good and that was away at Sheffield United. You have to give credit to them because they were on a huge high but if we went there now it may be different.

“When we went to Wolves and Brentford we lost both games but we were in them.

“Performances have been pretty good but we have to make sure we get the win

“You can talk about performance all you like, but if you don’t win games it’s not a very good football club. If we play well we know we have a better chance of winning.

“There needs to be a few adjustments, which may happen over the next 12 to 24 months – I don’t think it will happen overnight that’s for sure.”

Simon Moore came through 90 minutes for the Under-21s on his return from a groin injury. Simon Gillett is due to serve the first game of a two-match ban.
