Will Keane (knock), Greg Cunningham (hamstring), Jordan Hugill (suspension), and Jermaine Beckford (knee) are all sidelined. Winger Alessandro Diamanti is expected to make his full debut for Watford. On-loan signing Nathan Ake could feature, while fellow defender Joel Ekstrand is the only injury absentee, with a knee problem. Preston are unbeaten in their only two games against Watford in the League Cup, drawing 1-1 with them in 1971 before winning the replay 2-1. North End have failed to score just once in their previous 17 League Cup games, scoring 36 goals in that time. Watford have only reached the third round once in their previous five seasons (2013-14). The Hornets last failed to score in a League Cup game in August 2007, scoring in 17 consecutive games since then. please log in to view this image

Second string run out, to pressure any last minute changes in the squad. We had a lot of games in the Championship compared to the Prem. I hope we give it a good shot in the cups. Might be a distraction from a hard season to be honest.
For Tuesday’s Capital One Cup tie against Preston North End, Staffordshire official Stephen Martin will be the man in charge. Martin has only refereed the Hornets once previously, which came in the Golden Boy’s 3-2 defeat in the Capital One Cup against Norwich, in September 2013. The Staffordshire official, who referees in The Football League, has taken charge of 4 matches this season in all competitions, handing out 14 yellow cards. Last season, Martin officiated 36 games, 10 of which in the Championship, handing out 94 yellow cards and 5 red.

Ha - both FF and Vydra playing, wonder if Flowers said ok, who plays worse is out of the 17 quota to them!
None too shabby at all.... on paper However I have money on us winning this competition... could have done with a kinder draw tbh
With this team will it be appropriate to put the result in the "How did your other team do " thread? Yet another season when the other competitions don't matter. I always remember Boothroyd's quote that the second team he put out in the league cup was strong enough to win, but lost on the night.
Interesting starting team - does it give any pointers towards the final 17? Does it mean that Berghuis has a place in the squad & those playing are in the shop window / last chance saloon? Or the other way round?
Tell you what though, no Diamanti - I would have thought he needed game time to get match fit. Maybe he was too tired after the long trip north and needed a nap!
