maybe… winning losing drawing seem to be habits sometimes. There’s no doubt that playing the way we do leaves us open to the counter and sides try to feed off that, but playing the way we do has us second in the league. Honestly there’s individual mess ups and luck involved too.
You have to credit sheff united, Burnley and Blackburn for their organisation that enables them to win tight games. That part is not an accident. But you have to ask how often sides can hit the woodwork, miss guilt edge chances against them etc. I know people don’t like xg, but it gives an indication of chances created for and against. There’s no getting away from the fact that the blunts and Blackburn in particular have really ridden their luck. Not shown below but Blackburn would be miles off the pace fighting relegation. Conversely Coventry have been pretty unlucky, which is why annoyingly they were a good shout for Lampard. Only way was up.
Can this continue? I've followed this for a few years now and usually it's a reasonable indication of who might fall away and who might come good. It's why bookies look at this sort of stuff... and why we're much shorter odds than the blunts for promotion.
Does this kind of good/bad fortune sometimes seem to continue the whole season? Annoyingly sometimes it does. Leedsy innit.
