Yeah I don’t think we’ll sign a DM but defo need one imo.

What happens if Neil can’t adjust? Do we move Browne back to accommodate Neil as the 8 and essentially be worse off in both positions? That’s my worry tbh. Browne looked good as the 8 he was making runs and passes that Neil doesn’t see and we missed that last season. He was woeful against Cardiff hope it’s not too much too soon giving him captaincy whilst trying to adapt to a new role.

I think he'll thrive in the 6 tbh. He'll see loads of the ball and dictate play

The name of the game this season is promotion.......if we go out early in the League Cup and FA Cup to achieve this....I'm on board. There would have been opportunities for players to impress the new boss. If they didn't take them that is there issue. Roll on Sunday....HTL!!

Got back from the game about an hour ago. Been catching up on peoples thoughts on here and agree with most but not on others.
I thought Moore should have claimed a few free kicks first half but otherwise was OK.
Anderson, Johnson and Hjelde all struggled with Triantis the clear pick if the defence.
Rigg best midfielder but Ekwah did OK first half but tired second half which was understandable, same with Ba but he struggled mainly (first half header could have seen a different player). Aouchiche was in and out, mainly out. Mundle good first half but again faded second. Rusyn did plenty of running etc and had 2 good shots but again didn't show up much second half.

I'm starting to wonder if we should loan out Hjelde.

Saw people calling for Johnson's head already, mental. Hope he gets another progressive loan if we aren't keeping him around.

Think we've got a lot of lads to get rid of in a short period of time, I'm worried it isn't doable..

    Hjelde?
    Anderson
    Johnson
    Pembele
    Ba? Yes for me
    Bennette
    Hemir
Rusyn? Dunno what's happening with the lad

I’d loan all of them on your list. Need to play week in week out and we need space for better players competing, I’m also tempted by a 10 who looks like they have goals ahead of Adil but maybe being trigger happy. That’s 4/5 from the last summer window. Some may pick up with regular games at the right level but it’s not a good look for the recruitment team.

Yeah, well the rumour I'd heard was a centre mid in to replace Aouchiche, if/when he goes. Him and Ekwah both quietly linked with transfers away.

    So much uncertainty mate.

We’ll need to offload some to bring some I’d say. As you say that’s a lot to do. Big ask and a busy time for recruitment. There are a things to get right. Goals from more than one place and depth of quality for the long season in key positions. Signing sub standard players hasn’t helped either, hopefully some come good with games elsewhere.

Thoughts on the game after getting home and dried off, pre match the rain was horrendous.
We've got some really talented young lads but also frustrating...there wasn't an end pass going forward, I didn't realise Rusyn was playing until he was subbed off.
We gave up possession to easily at times which led to the first goal.
Thought Moore had a good game, was he unsighted for their second?
Rigg is different level to some of his team mates, Ba sadly frustrated me a lot, he's got the talent but his decision making is somewhat off.
For all our neat play we didn't make their keeper work enough.
I don't get to many games and it was good to be in amongst these away fans who despite the weather and our lack of a cutting edge gave the team their full backing.
Finally thanks to Smug for arranging our tickets, we enjoyed the night despite the result and the weather.

Thats why I suggested 3/5/2 on here before the game started, nt blaming any players for last night the decisions were our new manager and his advisers the two who masterminded last seasons colapse. The delay in changing the last 30 minutes was crucial as we were remarkably still in the game at that stage, I still fancied our chances in a penalty shoot out at that point. Their stand in coach made all the running on the timing of substitutions which is a slight worry imo.

Disappointing night overall for me. The positives Rigg played very well, Moore seemed a competent goalkeeper made a couple of good stops thought he could have done better for the 2nd goal but not sure if unsighted, Heldge OK, mundle OK but took a hefty knock early on not sure how this affected him. Negatives Anderson is dreadful Ba is frustrating hasn't kicked on time to move him on, Johnson not a full back but did OK. Minutes in the legs for Ekwah. Bits of quality play but didn't test their goalkeeper at all. Oh and we need a centre forward. Not to bothered by the defeat but I do think we are short in the squad and only 4 or 5 of them will help the first team when needed.

I honestly don't think you can judge this as a normal match tbh. Winning seemed to be almost irrelevant which we suspected with the selection and some of the bench. Bringing 'Harris and Jones' on at one nil down confirmed that for me. It seemed that RLB used it to look how the players would react, how their attitude would be and to get minutes into those he wants in and around the first team squad. It's possible there was a 'shop window' aspect to some of those leaving the club or going out on loan ... who knows.

It looked like he'd given the players instructions, sent them out and watched how they'd work things out ...

... courageous if that's what he did, at least the supporters were warned <laugh>

He's mentioned, a few times, about long term development and this seems part of the process, even if I don't yet understand it.

    Good morning.

I think we can review the loss more clearly this morning.

Obviously it's always disappointing to lose and end the cup run dream this early in the season, but I think we learned a lot from our back up players when put into balanced context.

I thought overall this wasn't a bad night, we fielded a reserve team in full against a full strength Preston and in the first half it was an even contest, Preston are a rock solid mid-table Championship outfit, their recent final positions in the league back that up, so to compete with them is a sign that even our reserve team is of this level, although admittedly very likely in the bottom third of the league. We should compare this with other teams in the league and consider how their full reserve team would do against similar mid-table Championship sides. I'd hazard a guess that other than a handful of teams, they'd all do a lot worse than our lads.

I thought Moore, Johnson, Triantis, Rigg, Ekwah, Mundle all did fairly well and I'd assume we'll see those players hovering around the first team in the coming months.

Hjelde, Ba, Rusyn, Aouchiche all can do better but might have to wait a little for more chances after last night. Joe Anderson, who is someone I had hopes for, I now suspect will go out on loan or be sold before the window closes, he is not quite ready to play at Championship level is my conclusion.

Overall, yes disappointing to be out of the cup, but some valuable data gained from the match.
