Aston Villa are interested in signing Preston goalkeeper Andy Lonergan.

The 27-year-old is likely to quit Deepdale after North End's relegation to League One.

Alex McLeish is planning on making the ex-England Under 21 player his reserve goalkeeper at Villa Park.

Villa are short on goalkeepers at the moment, but McLeish is still confident of raiding former club Birmingham to bring in England international Ben Foster.

He would then to drive a hard bargain with Preston to bring in an experienced reserve without breaking the bank.

North End would not be averse to letting Lonergan joining the Premier League side. Not only were they anticipating his departure, they already have a replacement lined up in the form of released Everton keeper and former Preston loanee Iain Turner expected to sign shortly.
