    Hi again,

All this of spending big or not this summer’s transfer window – there are worries and complaints on most premier forums to be honest. It depends what sort of figures one uses. If you take and add up EXPENDITURE for new players and simply DEDUCT money when you sell your players off I think that’s the most reliable way of doing it, as all clubs ALSO release players. Therefore, on the table below the highest spenders (after balancing incoming & outgoing) appear first, those who sell more than buy will be near the bottom then …

How does it come out? Well, very surprising for some!!:

    Chelsea FC -90.948.000 £
    Manchester United -47.163.600 £
    Manchester City -35.112.000 £
    Southampton FC -33.176.000 £
    Liverpool FC -28.292.000 £
    Aston Villa -19.562.400 £
    Queens Park Rangers -16.794.800 £
    West Ham United -15.967.600 £
    Stoke City -14.291.200 £
    Sunderland AFC -13.728.000 £
    Norwich City -9.213.600 £
    Reading FC -5.192.000 £
    Newcastle United -3.489.200 £
    West Bromwich Albion -2.200.000 £
    Everton FC +748.000 £
    Tottenham Hotspur +1.742.400 £
    Wigan Athletic +2.257.200 £
    Swansea City +5.693.600 £
    Arsenal FC +11.484.000 £
    Fulham FC +17.318.400 £

Thoughts, both on Norwich and the others ? …

So Sunderland only bought Fletcher then? They must have got the others for nothing!

Can you spot a club that has thrown a lot of money at their squad and still have as many, if not more, problems than before? No, not QPR, ...... Liverpool! And in second place, Villa <yikes> . Is there a moral here about US franchise owners? At least in Arsenal's case Stan Kroenke just lets the Arsenal old hands get on with it.

Yep, both Villa and Saints might have big problems if they don't produce the goods ...

I'd be a bit scared if I was a Saints fan. It's not so long ago that they were in administration - has the club learned nothing?

Having said that, their squad looks good and I expect them to stay up comfortably.

Having been a bit disappointed about no striker coming in, I can now see just how astute CH and co were in bringing in 9 new players for £9m. For the loss of Crofts, Whitbread, Drury and Wilbraham, City now have two quality players at 12 different positions (the 12th being in the hole in a lone striker formation). Snodgrass is almost a new striker in addition to all his other talents and is good at tracking back as well. Garrido also oozed class against Spurs once he adjusted to Lennon's threat, and his crossing was also superb. Bassong and Barnett (like a new signing himself) were very solid except for the blip against Defoe on the edge of the box. All this and we still have yet to see what Tettey (if he can displace Johnson who was superb against Spurs), Whittaker, Butterfield, Bunn and Kane will bring later on. A great job done by all those concerned. OTBC!

the quality of the squad as a whole has improved massively for an outlay of £9m - that's rather impressive!

The thing is, if any team goes down then they're 'saved' financially - isn't the parachute money something like an incredible 70M for the last-placed club now? But of course, no team wants to go down, so we all tend to do the calculations for 10th to 17th place! Well, Reading certainly do, even with that rich new Russian chairman ...

true, i think most teams budget for relegation too. but you'd still need to slash wages by a considerable amount to sustain any club, even with those parachute payments! thankfully for us, if we were to go down, our wage budget would only need to be slashed by a small amount so we'd probably be able to keep hold of many of our players, assuming they wanted to stay of course. imagine if qpr or even liverpool (unlikely i know, but it could happen) went down - they'd be screwed.

By the way, slightly off-topic but not worth making a topic just for this:

Development Squad face Reading today. NORWICH City’s Under-21 development squad face Reading at the Colney Training Centre this afternoon. The Canaries have got their campaign off to a good start having won their opening two fixtures. Due to ongoing construction work at Colney, the game will not be open to the public. However, there will be live updates via the official Club Twitter account, with a match report and highlights to follow on www.canaries.co.uk

    Royals take on Norwich
    http://www.readingfc.co.uk/news/article/u21s-in-action-today-030812-349605.aspx
Reading's under 21 team are in action away to Norwich today, kick off 2pm. With the majority of our senior pros away in Ireland for the Bray friendly or on international duty, this game gives a number of our Academy players the chance to get minutes under their belt. Brynjar Gunnarsson is the experience pro among the ranks, and will captain the side from centre half.
Reading: Henly; Arnold, Webb, Gunnarsson (c), Partridge; D'Ath, Tshibola, Taylor, Losasso; Samuel, Tanner
Subs: Lincoln, Cooper, Ikpeazu, Oliyide, Jenkinson
Boss Chris Cummins said, "We've stayed up overnight and this week we've got a very young team, Bryn is our experienced player leading the talking from the back and it's a good chance for some of our Academy boys to come out from the pack, so to speak. This is our third game now and I've been pleased with the lads, I believe the right way to play is to have experience around the young players. Last week we had Bryn, Morro, Church and so on and it was one of the best performances from the young group."
There is no public access today but City will have updates on their Twitter feed @NorwichCityFC

Although it's not open to the public, I hope the younger lads enjoy a good game ...
