Do you need a cable tv contract to do this or will I be able to access it with a VPN?

You need a contract but I think basically every single cable tv company is eligible. Basically you go to the NBC website and it confirms you have an active service and then they let you watch any game you want to live. I dont think it will let you do it if you are outside the US. I think Canadatiger tried last season and it wouldnt let him log in from Canada.

Try to log on Willson. Liverpool vs Brondby is on right now live.

Would the MSL league nick all the best players if soccer really really takes off..given the kinda salaries the US teams would pay?..cant compare to middle east leagues as no one really wants to live there for any longer than a year...even Eto and his crazy salary left that league.

Don't think you can call the Russian premier league a "Middle East" league. It's not like those who go to Qatar or UAE for a year. The players at Anzhi lived and trained in Moscow.
