It was interesting that fans picked Salah for player of the season. Unlike pundits or journalists who go with the top scorer, fans have no need to do that. We all see the same things and assess them differently.
It has been one I've been thinking on and honestly it would have been between him and vvd up to Christmas but it does show how the season went with injuries A top 5 might have had macca, vvd, salah, gomez and maybe nunez Others such as konate and szobo completely faded while others like Elliott didnt get a lot of consistent time In the absence of someone who performed all season it does make sense to go for the numbers and the popular forward. I hope next year sees a lot more consistency in terms of playing staff and we've that platform.for the league and cl.
Alisson was the stand out player last year. Without him we’d have been battling top 4 not in a title challenge
If have said Alisson too, which is testament to how good he was considering he missed half the season
Still think when he played was a class above everyone else. Which says a lot given how poor defensively we were last year.
Only the top two conceded fewer than we did, but I agree we weren't as solid as we should have been. I think you can draw a distinction between the player with the most impact or the one who was most consistent. Ali, when he played, was the most consistent by far, imo - but Salah scored the most goals so I can see why some think of him as being the best performer. I wouldn't have picked him, because he was very patchy over the course of the season. I'd have probably gone for MacA - although he struggled a bit when played too deep.
I think Mac also struggled towards the end of the season. I’m not sure anyone was brilliant all year - I can understand people not going Ali as he missed a lot (more than I realised tbh) but think when he did play was just top class. I do think we are very spoiled with him - just how he makes the difficult look so easy and holds onto so much. Endo was probably solid all year - not outstanding but consistent. Rest I think all has good spells and dips making it tricky.
I wonder what some folk on sky know about football. More than half the "pundits" predicting England's opening game line up are piling on the attackers and leaving only rice as a cm. Palmer, foden, saka, Bellingham must all play behind kane apparently. It's like as if none have ever heard of Gareth Southgate.
Tbh I think the team pretty much picks itself. The only question is does Southgate go conservative with gallagher alongside rice or more adventurous and get TAA in there. Otherwise its Pickford Walker Stones Guehi Trippier Gallagher/Taa Rice Saka Bellingham Foden Kane
Any picking of gallagher is a hang, draw and quarter offense. It'd be absolute madness. Someone has to give the ball to the forwards
Alisson is the best goalkeeper in the world and no doubt he’s outstanding every season. I think because he missed so much of the season, that puts him out of contention. We didn’t lose a game with Kelleher in goal and only drew two, so his keeping had as much impact on our season. Virgil and Macallister came 2nd and 3rd in the voting.
I think everyone would have the same rough 3 or 4. For me its not a shock as none of them put in a full season
I would have had but he blew up for tje last two months and missed a couple matches too from sheff utd assualt Vvd for first 3? Months. The cbs looked like defending and clean sheets really mattered Then macca when endo came in and he moved to 8 but he faded So the run in games I felt gakpo and Elliott stepped up bit others really faded. My best 11 of the season would be Alisson Bradley konate vvd gomez (when thry bothered) Szobo endo macca (when thry could run) Salah nunez diaz (again when bothered) We just hit a wall in the end made from fitness, form and fatigue.
Sorey you’d have Bradley over TAA? TAA was great this year and although Bradley came in and did well he was no where near as good as TAA.
Taa missed most of the season with injury. I'd have put gomez there if Robertson has not also missed a lot. Trent had too long off imo. He also returned half fit twice and it really showed. Really thats the issue for me. Nobody had a full season. We didn't do too bad when you look at all those injuries
TAA 28 prem games 5 Europa league 2 efl cup total 35 games bradley 11 prem games 4 Europa league 4 efl cup total games 19 So even Trent who missed ‘olmo at of the season’ (1/4 of the prem games available) played nearly double that of Bradley who missed 3/4 of the prem season. makes sense….
Just read an article on thisisanfield.com on Liverpool’s best IX for the season. Using FotMob - and I have no idea who they are other than they collect Premier League data - the best IX were: Alisson TAA Konaté VVD Robbo Szoboszlai Mac Allister Elliott Salah Jota Diaz I was surprised by Jota’s inclusion. He took part in 21 games but only played 4 full 90 minutes. Only one player in the PL got a rating across the season of above 8 - city’s Rodri - but Salah came closest with 7.64. Salah also became the first player in PL history to have three consecutive seasons with double figures for both goals and assists. Anyway it’s all only based on a set of data collated by one company which in turn, is based on their opinions and match ratings per player.
