Pre Season Nerves...

Some months back, most Gills fans including me, appeared to be getting very frustrated at the lack of signings and the apparent lack of money available to buy players.

Obviously all assumptions on our part in regards to finances, however, it appeared with our resources we would be remaining for more than another season in League Two.

Then suddenly everything changed, the money appeared and Scally was our saviour with a total of eight new signings, Kedwell, Birchall, Whelpdale, Lee, Frampton, Montrose, Flitney, Fish.

The Gills fans were united again and promotion was on the horizon...hang on a minute stop right there! The season has not even started yet, promotion?

Yes, we are Gills and the bombshell was dropped, our new striker Birchall was injured and will be out for a number of months, to make things worse Oli and S Payne have picked up knocks.

Do we need to worry, well we have failed to score in recent friendlies against, Millwall, Orient and Faversham.

There has been talk of Cody on the message boards, although all talk, hopes, what ever you want to call it, nothing official and don't appear likely to be.

I also read we have spent our budget, so here is my take on all this if it was all my investment, we can sit back and do nothing and all that investment is put to a big gamble on how we start the season, or we can take out some insurance cover and bring another striker in quick.

Or is this all just pre season nerves?

This is a result of the bi-polar nature of being a football fan.

Every new signing is the next club saviour who will bring yet unachieved fame and glory to the club.

Every injury is devastating and will rob the club of it rightful glory

The truth is porbably somewhere in between

I share your nerves to some respect BRB. I do however believe that the lack of goals against Faversham and Millwall inparticular is nothing to be concerned about. No first team players played against Faversham, and we played very well against a Millwall side who played a strong team and are two divisions above us. Against Orient, we perhaps should have scored a few but I am a great believer that often pre-season's are misleading. You get glimpses about what our team is going to be like and if there has been any indication so far, I would suggest that our defence will be particularly strong and we won't score as many goals as last season, but enough to compete at the top. I agree we obviously need to loan another striker, Paul Benson isn't happening now as although our offer was accepted, he didn't want to move. I hope we loan another young, hungry striker like Cody was who can assist Kedwell in the scoring departement. Lastly, if there was ever a season where we need Weston and the rest of our midfield to chip in with goals, it's certainly now.
