The local area pre Dolman. The toilets look worse than the old EE open air ones !

When did the building actually start?

I can recall sitting on the fence at the back of the side terracing after the the roof had been removed. I'm pretty sure it was a game against Cardiff and we lost 3-0. Behind me was a drop of about 20 feet but no-one gave a toss - elf and safety - pah!

During my first season (that I remember) there was nothing on that side of the ground aside from banks of earth.
I much preferred floodlight pylons to the (now) standard lights in the roofs of stands almost everywhere. It gave you a landmark when looking for other grounds.
I also preferred goalposts/frames with stanchions rather than the stanchionless ones these days.
