Gus Poyet has revealed Sunderland fans have got him singing along in the dug-out - but the head coach has vowed never to repeat a public chanting session he had at Brighton.

Poyet has praised the Wearside travelling contingent who have sold out the away end at Fulham despite being bottom of the league.

He said: “They have been great. They’ve got a few songs that they never stop singing. That one about things getting better, even I am on the bench moving to it!

“That shows you that we know they are there and we know how important they are to us. Incredible. The away fans are probably a bit happier than the home fans.”

Poyet reckons it would be pleasing if the Black Cats could spark a chant similar to the one Brighton fans invented when they turned in some flawless performances to get promoted.

Poyet recalled: “I have sung one song in my life, and I got a letter from the FA! It was a bad one when we won the league with Brighton. If you go on YouTube and check you will see it’s very bad. It was bad because there were kids listening but I thought my singing was great.

“There were a group of fans singing after we won at Peterborough. It went: “We are f***ing brilliant.” And yes, we were outstanding, we were good. I wanted to keep that DVD of the game for ever.

“At the end the fans were repeatedly singing and I thought it was incredible. We kept doing well and beat Charlton away 4-0 and they kept singing it and it kept coming back to me.

“So when we celebrated after winning the league I had a good idea to take the microphone at the street parade and started singing. Unfortunately there were about 3,000 kids there and I got a letter from the FA saying that I had to stop.”
