Watched the replay last night, great result! Guess we'll never know if Stoke were going to come and sit back because the early goal quickly changed their plans.
As already mentioned, the team looks like it's starting to click now. Some good moves through the pitch with the ball and the new players are looking more settled. My pick of the summer transfers so far are Kipre, Egeli, Matusiwa, Nunez and Furlong. Darnell has fixed our RB problem and was up against a good player in Thomas yesterday. It may have looked not convincing at times, but what Furlong did was enough to prevent Thomas from being too effective down that side. Egeli is an upgrade on Hutchinson and I'd rather have him now than Omari. Sindre's overall size and strength will be far more helpful if we reach the PL than the slight frame of Hutch. Kipre has been immense in the last couple of games and Matusiwa is just so good at intercepting and pinching the ball off players. Nunez, whilst a tad selfish at times, is looking better and better in the 10 role.
Somebody needs to tell Azon to forget about the Spanish style football upbringing and get a bit of 'English' about him! He's too willing to fall over hoping for a free kick that may be given in Spain but not here. He could be so much better if he just stood up to challenges more. I noticed that Cajuste came on and had a fire in his belly. With Taylor keeping him out of the starting eleven at the moment, that was the reaction I wanted to see.
O'Shea had a brilliant game, and Walton keeps the gloves because we do look better with him in goal. He catches high balls instead of punching like Palmer does and is always looking for the quick release ball if it's on.
All in all, a solid performance. We couldn't build on the early goal but also didn't really look under serious threat. There was a good balance between committing players forward while not leaving us short at the back. The game actually looked a lot like some of the games we've had against teams that want to defend deep. We let Stoke play the ball between their CBs and into midfield but it didn't often get much further. Yes they had more possession, but we didn't allow them to breach the final third. We then sprung several quick counters after regaining possession and probably should have had at least another goal.
With only 2 games left before Christmas and a 5 point gap to 'boro, my prediction of top 2 by then looks unrealistic, but we are creeping up. Second best goal difference and high in the charts for goals scored and not conceding many. I have full confidence we'll make the autos.
