Rumours doing the rounds on TWTD that Sherwood along with Luton / LIncoln bosses are supposedly as a shortlist of 3 for us next season to replace Mick. Probably just a load of bull, however if Sherwood WAS to EVER set foot into Portman Road - unless he had us top of the league flying etc - I think I would be POTENTIALLY the same as Spanish has been re Mick! What do people think of Tim ? It's NOTHING to do with his Norwich connections for me - more how much of an arrogant p**** he is. I absolutely detest the man. I don't think it will happen, but if it did.... BOY.
For once I am totally in agreement with you. Can't stand the arrogant prick Would love to see the Lincoln boys here
Yorkie we'd agree in lots in person - be awesome if we could get a group of us together one day. I guarantee we're all different in person. Take dating - years ago, met various women off MSN / internet. Some were cool as hell in person despite typing style, others were cool typers but absolute melts in real life!
Tim Sherwood is an odious man. Did what was expected with a talented Spurs side, but consistently got outplayed and thrashed against the bigger clubs. Effectively relegated a Villa side that certainly had its off-field issues, but he still spent millions at his time there and I remember the season they went down, he boasted 'this is a Sherwood squad now'. Think he got one win in 10 at the start of that season and then got the boot. Not sure how involved he was at Swindon as the Director of Football, but they were relegated under his watch and he promptly got the boot. He hasn't achieved anything in his short managerial career and, given the choice between McCarthy and Sherwood for next season, it's one of the few times where I would prefer another season with McCarthy!
Interested in the Lincoln boss, could be the next type of manager we want. Have mixed feelings about Sherwood, he did very well at Tottenham and actually brought alot of youngsters through to the first team including Harry Kane. I think our next manager needs to be someone who has developed young talent and Sherwood fits this bill. I'd prefer a more understated appointment with a manager with experience but someone who has built a club and a team like Cowley or a Tisdale. I think if the conditions were right and things clicked Sherwood wouldn't be a disaster trouble is he's got a big personality, he'd be a name appointment and actually had little managerial experience.
Oh and I think we missed a trick not getting Paul Cook from Portsmouth (now at Wigan), seems like a good manager to me
The Cowley brothers would be the romantic choice, and they certainly deserve a chance at a higher level after their work with Lincoln. Potentially clinching a play off place this season too, which would be very impressive. However, they don't advocate the most attractive style of football, which may be an issue for people looking for a clear break from the past. I'd argue Nathan Jones at Luton, who are ripping up that division while playing some of the most attacking football in the country, deserves a top spot from the lower league managers. We'd do a lot worse than him and I'd like to think the style of football would be greatly improved. The other lower league manager I'd like to see here over the Cowley dithers is Paul Hurst at Shrewsbury. He's bound to move to a bigger club soon and could be the next "Paul Cook" in that respect. He's been a success everywhere he has been and achieved promotion at all his clubs bar the current one, Shrewsbury, where he has them competing at the top and has only recently joined them. They gave two good accounts of themselves against West Ham in the FA Cup this season too. Either way, they are impressive, innovative, and favourable options from the lower league. They don't always work out, but I'd much prefer a younger, hungrier, and more attacking inclined manager here rather than one of the tired, old "been there, done that" faces we have recently been stuck with.
Must admit know zero re Paul Cook however Wigan are flying so probably a very good gafa. Maybe biased as live in Bristol - however a massive fan of Daryl Clark of Bristol Rovers.
Just to clear the air.. I was being sarcastic. I would disown the club if either of them were appointed
I would love to see us go and bring in someone like Paul Tisdale or Darrell Clarke But the reality is we'll get Phil Brown.
Also, Mick is now 10/11 odds on favourite to get the Barnsley gig I'll believe it when it happens as I suspect Evans wouldn't want to be 'managerless' for any length of time and will probably drag his heels somehow scuppering any possible deal if Barnsley were to make an approach
I've only seen Luton in the FA cup last year and to be fair for a lower league team they looked like they could play abit. I mean they played us off the park twice to be fair they did lump it up to the big man up top a times but that doesn't bother me as long as long as a team shows a bit of positivity to take the initiative. Do I dare put Tony Mowbrays name into the equation with Mark Venus as assistant? Known for playing good football and got quite a bit of experience across alot of leagues, he's rarely out of work and he knows the club's values. I think Mick going to Barnsley would be a good thing, it's clear he's not going to be here next season so given it's now a dead rubber why not go now and it gives us time to look at options ahead of the summer without needing to rush an appointment
According to the bookies, its a two-horse race between Mick (8/11) and Cowley (2/1) - the next best is Grayson at 12/1 if this was nearer the end of the season, i'd say it would be a banker for him to go, but as we still have 1g games to go, and an outside chance of play offs, there's no way Mick will be allowed to leave now. In saying that, if Barnsley are happy to appoint someone to the end of the season, then Mick will go, guaranteed.
Out of all the realistic experienced managers that would typically make up a Marcus Evans managerial shortlist, Tony Mowbray would be my choice, itfcptc, for the reasons that you mentioned. He'd be a fairly good PR move too, on the board's part.
There definitely does seem to be something in these Mick to Barnsley rumours doing the rounds. I wouldn't be surprised or disappointed if Mick does take the job, he's done a good job here overall but has been outstaying his welcome for the past couple of years). Having said that, we're not exactly in a perilous situation and I think giving the new manager time to bed in during the remainder of this season would be beneficial for next season. Unfortunately, I don't know how many of the faces we'd like to see in charge (Mowbray, Jones, Clark, the Cowleys, Hurst et al) would be prepared to uproot their successes in a lower division to come and spend half a season milling about in mid-table with us. My main fear is that Mick uses this interest to negotiate a longer-term contract with us. I don't think this will happen, as there seems to be an unofficial acknowledgement that Evans needs a fresh approach to increase attendances and McCarthy is disillusioned with the fanbase and probably desires a new challenge.
