I'm just trying an experiment to see if we can get more of us on a Daily Thread. The present Daily Thread has become so successful it's just like the old 606 days. However I have noticed that maybe some of the earlier NOT 606 participants have dropped off as it has become dominated by the more serious tipsters. I'm proposing therefore to re-name The Daily Racing Thread "The A Team Daily Racing Thread" and to introduce a second Daily Racing thread called (believe it or not) "The B Team Daily Racing Thread". If you are happy with this just start off the Daily Threads as normal but stick A or B Team in the heading. If it doesn't take off we'll just revert back to normal. Please note the piece in blue italics has been completely withdrawn. Please refer to Post 6 in this thread. Thanks Ron
Ron I think the daily thread should be (and is) just about exchanging views, posting fancies and generally conversing on the days racing. Everyone is welcome and I don't think there is anyone on there who would not welcome new posters, whether they have a fancy or just want to post some thoughts on a particular race. I think maybe some "non-posters" may think it is "cliquey" because there are the usual suspects on there each day and a lot of us have known each other for a while. But for me any new posters are welcome and no one need worry about putting up a fancy that doesn't win (I should know!!!). There is a really good vibe on here and that is really down to your hard work and also a good bunch of posters. I don't think we need introduce a "class system" here, lets get everyone conversing and the more the merrier. On BBC 606 we often had 400+ comments on the daily thread so lets just grow this one. Everyone is welcome !!!
Ron, what is the point of an "A" and "B" Thread? If I had a criticism of not606, it's that it's too orientated towards 'tipping' and like BBC 606 seems to be a little 'cliquish'- with not enough variety of Articles. Notwithstanding, I accept that the Forum is for everyone and therefore, if the majority want tipping, then that's fair enough. No patronisation at all, but I think you've done a fantastic job in what you (and any others involved) have achieved here, so my criticism becomes largely academic.
Thinking about it, A and B teams is a very bad idea because it would involve the main contributors of the Daily Thread alienating themselves by calling themselves the A Team. Therefore I completely withdraw that part of the suggestion. Keep the Daily Thread exactly asis. I know everyone is welcome on the Daily Thread and thanks for making that clear. I also agree that ideally more people would join in on the Daily Thread. It is a measure of the success of this forum that the Daily Thread has over 1500 views most days and has been over 2,250 and it is great to see most, if not all, the old 606 members here. However, as I recall it the 606 Daily Thread was accused from time to time of being rather cliquey which did put off some posters. So that is the reason for suggesting maybe another thread to accommodate those who don't feel at home on the Daily Thread. The name choice was very poor but the basic idea remains open for debate; effectively having 2 clubs who combine for everything except the Daily Thread. If anyone thinks there could be some mileage in another Daily Thread (whatever it be called) maybe they could PM me rather than post here. All I am doing at present is observing and trying to establish if there is scope for wider participation. At the end of the day we want everyone to be happy and to feel comfortable participating. Thank you for the comments so far.
most of the guys on the thread seem to know each other personally - don't know how to solve it but i sometimes feel like a bit like a spare at a wedding - great tipsters though
I don't really know many people from the thread personally but feel that I would like to share my views with others and see if they agree/disagree. However, everybody is different so I can't comment on everybody
In some ways the extra thread has merit, it could possibly widen the scope of the forum, but I'm not too sure that the idea, as good as it is, will actually attract more posters. I remember reading a statement from the BBC saying that at the demise of the site, there were only about 500,000 hits per week. Of those, only about 13,000 commented, the rest were there just for the read. I think our Daily Thread is fine as it does appear non threatening. I don't personally know a single soul on the site.
Likewise Cyclonic, I don't personally know a single person on this site. I 'd be interested to know how many members do know one another, apart from via the keyboard.
I know what you mean Minty. I felt exactly like that on 606. Once in a while I would join in only to feel invisible. I suppose that's why I now feel for some of the members on here. It's only natural for those who have got to know each other to converse more freely with each other and unless one is a natural "mingler" it is difficult to become one of the lads. Maybe another way would be for another group to form a clique and join in on the Daily Thread and hope that the cliques unite over time. I'm open to any suggestions that could encourage a greater mix.
I don't really understand that is just me being thick as always I come on here to talk about todays racing and share thoughts/pick up advice thats why I come on a racing forum - surely the write ups from seeral members is a good point ?. There is nothing else to talk about is there ? because you have a bit banter and your posts just get deleted
morning all ron i think an new A-B THREAD would make a two tier system of them and us and probably cause more people to stay away, imo i don't think it's broke, i come on here for comps mostly which are great and don't post much but always look into other peoples posts but don't feel excluded and if other not606'ers do i don't think this will fix it, but this is the way thorough discussion, this is the best forum on the net thanks to all.
Would there be a promotion/relegation system? Say you get 3 winning NAPs do you get promoted to the A team? But if you go a week without any winners would you get relegated? I think its a bad idea to be honest, can't see many people posting on a 'B' thread so what would probably happen is the usual suspects would post on the 'A' thread and everyone else would just view it without feeling too comfortable to post. One possible improvement is if it was like on 606 where you could see everyone's NAPs at the top of the page (included in the original article), obviously someone would need to update this throughout the day. If you are looking for tips it can be easy to miss people's selections as there are pages and pages to read through sometimes.
There is a certain clique which does now seem to have taken over the daily thread, for want of a better phrase, and I see fewer original members posting but I don't see an obvious way around it. I agree with Sir Percy though that getting the naps posted up on the opening post is a good thing but it really is down to the original poster of the daily thread, as they are the only ones who can edit the opening post, unless the moderator can also do this? I can sympathesis though that clearly someone may not be available all day to firstly start the daily thread then update this throughout the day so it really does revolve around someone having the time and consideration to take this on! It's not an easy one I can imagine! It would be quite a job to do. Some posters do still update their daily threads like Cyclonic, (maybe RV too or I might still be on 606 time?!). I think thats where Famous is so badly missed, he always provided a really good daily thread on 606 and updated it throughout the day with, to be honest, very little thanks from some members. I think it's sad he no longer posts on here, maybe the cliquey element drove him away, I don't know. I hope that's not the case
Famous is in good form Beeforsalmon he just has a new job now and doesn't get the time to post any more
What the site needs is a daily thread where you enter your nap into a box and its automatically updated on the first post of the thread. Unfortunately I don't see this happening. Also the fact the site is still having loading issues and its continues trying to transfer data is more important than sorting new ideas out.
Please note. The A Team/B Team was killed in the opening thread and on post No 6. Personally I wasn't keen on a single person taking over the Daily Thread. It was good that anyone and everyone could feel free to start it each day, sometimes the night before or in the early hours of the morning. However, times change. It is now a much larger forum and the Daily Thread is, in the main, occupied by a different set now. If it is the wish of the forum, and someone wants to take on the task of running the Daily Thread and maintaining the naps at the top of the thread, then I suggest that we look for volunteers who can undertake that task. I would suggest some organised back up though. At present daily naps are in a different thread and naps are entered only when individuals have a selection they feel worthy of a nap. From the viewpoint of picking up the naps and recording them in order to maintain monthly and YTD tables, having all the naps for the month in one thread is ideal for me. However there is no reason why the naps league can't be taken over by someone else and run differently. Now that this forum is probably the best horse racing forum around, with virtually all the old 606ers on board, I'm thinking maybe the time is right for a review of the forum, starting with a gathering of views on the way forward. I'll start a thread now so that if any views are forthcoming on here or any other thread, I can amalgamate them under a single thread. Any views on the forum can be added in a post or by PM. I will read and reply to all PMs received. Have a great weekend Ron
I like the daily thread as it is. I do not post on it often as I cannot access the forum at work and tend to be busy at weekends. Otherwise I would be on it more often. Unlike the old 606 daily threads sometimes were, I don't think it is cliquey at all on not606.
Good to hear RV. He always contributed plenty towards the old 606 so it would be nice should he feel able to pop in here again from time to time, perhaps for the jumps season.
