Last week i received an email from bet365 saying thanks for opening an account with a username comprising of my birthday, year of birth and first name. i've been with bet365 for about 10 years, and haven't ever attempted to open a new account with them. So i rang them and asked what was going on. Was told that nothing looked suspicious and they blamed it on a computer error and shut it down. It was with the same email address that is registered with them, so i'm not sure how the site would let you attempt to open a new account with the same email anyway. Have obviously kept a close eye on my bank account which has had no unrecognizable deposits or anything, so thought nothing more of it. Until today. I received an email from Coral thanking me for opening an account with the same username as the weird bet365 one. Now when the bet365 one happened i was betting with them for a few days before and around the time the account opened. And the same with Coral, i have used from saturday. Anyone else had anything similar? or any ideas whats happening? The weird thing is the user name was the same, and the fact its a mixture of specific letters and numbers relevant to me.
Can't say I've experienced this or heard of it before hawkeye but it sounds quite sinister to me. I'd obviously be changing all my passwords and that, as well as running a scan with whatever antivirus software you use.
I would ask them a few questions eg do they allow multiple accounts and, if not, what steps are taken to prevent them given your assurance that you have not set up a new account what evidence can they provide that indicates you have eg what was the date and time the new account was set up from what ISP address was the account set up If they aren't very helpful or convincing I would ask them how they think potential new clients would view their apparent lack of concern for the security of their accounts. Can you actually see the new account and, if so, what happens if you try to access it with the password you have on your existing account?
To answer a few questions. I changed all passwords for money related accounts on a different computer last week, as well as hotmail ect... Done a full system scan which didn't pick anything up. Never heard of the heartbleed bug, so no. I asked how is was possible to open an account with the same email, and they said you can't, so strange that it happened twice. I didn't actually try logging in to either before i contacted the support and they froze them. I always keep an eye on whats coming in an out of my currant account and nothing peculiar has happened there. Can't really understand why anyone would try to open an account in my name, other than money laundering or something like that because it would all leave a papertrail if it was sinister. Will update if anything else happens.
If according to them it can't happen but it has, I have no confidence in that outfit whatsoever. Did they close imaginary accounts then?
