Poor referees?

I was just reading a thread CJS has put on their site, he has noted that Howard Webb has been appointed for their cup game on Saturday and is relieved to have a break from the "usual ****e" they get in league 2.

Well, I have noticed that the standard of refereeing at Ashton Gate this year has also been shocking, not a home game has gone by this year where The Atyeo hasn't booed the latest clown off the pitch.

I've always been one for we get a few and lose a few when it comes to referees but I must agree it has been shocking this year!

Why the drop in standard?
 
I think they showboat and flounce their selves about too much,somebody on one of the channels said he was watching one of the games and the players came running on to the pitch but the 4 officials went into a huddle on the side of the pitch and hugged one another,the players were waiting and watching them,what's that all about,VAIN TWATS.....?
 
i have to say banksy, it was the same for us in league 1 last season but much worse in league which really is what you would expect, standards to drop as the leagues drop. maybe its a case where the closer to the bottom of your league you are, all the major decisions go against you.

swindon home game recently should of had as blatant pen in 1st min and a red card. nothing given. against barnet i was told we should of had a clear pen just before they scored their 1st against us. just a couple of examples amongst so many more this season. dont want it to sound as an excuse as im not using it as one as i blame buckle (and lee johnson of course ;)) but we havent had much joy recently from refs.
 
The concept of the 'Homer' ref is definitely NOT alive and well at Ashton Gate this year thats a fact!
 
Now You got me started!

Asst refs, bunch of knobbers! will not make a decision unless the ref tells them to. absolute waste of time.
 
well howard webb has just been sacked by man utd

in all seriousness the ref's are getting worse they need to be more accountable to their actions the ref chief is useless let the refs come out and say why they made a desicion
 
I might take a bit of stick for my comments but as an ex-ref I tend to side on their side. That doesn't mean to say that I haven't seen some appalling decisons by supposedly top class referees.

Instant replay is a very derisive issue but you know it would help, despite the detractors who say it would be too expensive. Is it not expensive to get relegated by a bad decision or miss out on promotion, so I don't think the cost is even a factor.

Each team would be allowed 1 review per half and hopefully some, if not most, bad decisions would be reversed and the game would be won or lost with total fairness. It would also stop top managers getting in to the leagues bad books and receiving suspensions. In the National Hockey League they have a central control centre watcing all games and backing up their referee system with a second look, and it works very well.

I totally agree with you all that something needs to be done to improve the current system and allowing reviews, subject to a specific time restriction of say 30 seconds, after which the on-pitch decision stands would work. It is so simple!

Referees don't have the advantage of second looks and have to make their decision instantly and live with the consequences, so spare them a thought, because without them there would be no game as we know and love it.
 
Thats a fair enough comment Mike but the standard seems to have diminished rapidly and the inconsistency is unbearable, this has been a recent decline to my mind.

Football is becoming a non contact sport and for those of us that have played it 20 or 30 years ago I don't think that will ever sit well.
 
Inconsistency is always the killer and I must agree that today's referees seem to see it as a powder puff game, and the good old shoulder seems to be the crime of the century. Non contact indeed.
 
refs are ****ing terrible, even at prem level, why it isnt like rugby ill never know, also the refs in rugby are alot stricter, you dont see rugby players swearing and shouting at the ref, if they do there off, not like footballers, about 7/8 of them surrounding the ref crying to him, as for lino's....
 
The respect campaign has highlighted a lot that to respect a ref they need to show they can do the job.
It does seem that the worse ones we get are the prem refs as it is an unfair system that if they balls up a decision they get demoted down one league rather than suspended or given additional training.

I can accept that refs make mistakes as they are only human but i would like refs to be consistent as i am fed up that the same ref will give a red card for a foul but when the same thing happens again not even a free kick is given.

I also think linesmen need to start earning the title assistant refs and make decisions as it does seem they can only flag corners and throw ins and get offsides wrong so would we miss them if they weren't there
 
Great point shiny! If the players spent less time berating referees because they didn't like his decision then perhaps they wouldn't lose concentration on the job at hand.

Time the refs started clamping down on the all too common bad mouthers in every team. As an aside I can't help but notice the number of times that foul throws are allowed along with keepers punting the ball when just outside the penalty area. The line is part of the pitch and as such both feet must be on the ground and behind the line.

Watch the next game carefully and see if I'm right.
 
If the keeper releases the ball from his hands before leaving the area that is ok? (as I remember)
 
Howard Webb, one of the most overrated refs in the top flight.Always seems to make a major gaff in all the televised games I've seen him perform in and so bloody inconsistant.
