    Johnson rues "poor" display
    upload_2016-4-20_11-7-4.jpeg

Head coach angered by Derby defeat.

Lee Johnson was left angered by a City performance he deemed “poor” after big-spending Derby County ran out 3-2 winners at Ashton Gate.

The head coach reasoned his side were too slow to get going in both halves and made too many mistakes in possession, ultimately letting a 2-1 half-time lead slip.
Goals from Jonathan Kodjia and Bobby Reid had turned the tide in City’s favour after Johnny Russell’s opener, but Derby struck twice in quick succession through Craig Bryson and Tom Ince to ensure Johnson’s men are still not quite over the line in the Sky Bet Championship survival race.
“I thought we were poor,” the boss told
    Bristol City Player HD.
“We did very well to get ourselves back in the game and I thought the lads were working hard – they were very honest in their work rate and effort – but the quality on the ball was poor.
“That’s the difference and that’s what we have to make sure we improve.
“I want to give every chance to the players that are here to improve that, and at times we’ve really shown that because we’ve been in good form, but today we didn’t.
“It just goes to show that you have to look after the football, and if you don’t, you get punished.
“We played into their hands on two occasions – the first 15 minutes of the game and the first 15 minutes of the second half.
“I’m angry because we told them that we had to move the ball quicker and that we didn’t have time to pose and have a look – you’ve got to know your next pass and play from that.
“You have to give credit to the opposition for how quickly they close you down and how slick they are on the break, but I’m just disappointed with our boys, who have been so good in recent times, but made too many mistakes tonight.
“It was two or three mistakes in a row that were killing us, and we don’t normally do that.
“People started going into their shells a bit, but you’ve got to be brave and you’ve got to be bold with the mindset of wanting to be the best player on the pitch – it’s a showcase and you’ve got to play every game like it’s your last.
“I thought we did great to get back in it. We looked like if we did get the first or second pass out we were in, but on too many occasions we didn’t. We just have to pick them up now and go again on Saturday.”

Sounds spot on to me, Exactly what I saw.

Poor performance.. move on and get over the line. 1 point is all thats needed, get the job done and then we can all relax.

Agreed - LJ seems good at dishing out the right amount of praise and criticism as it's called for. He may just be cut out for this managerial business :)

He's going to need to be strong.
If we spend any significant money during the close season, then the expectations on achieving something will start to grow.

What was equally obvious was the quality of player compared to ours.
How many of our lot would get in their side based on last night's performance ?

The Championship has improved considerably since we played in the P/O Final.
In a perfect world to challenge next year I think we need 6 quality signings this summer.
    A Keeper, 2 Defenders, 2 Midfielders and a Striker.
Can't see it happening though, it'll cost to much so we'll make do and mend.
Sorry to offend the Forum Police, but just as the appointment of our head coach, I fear we'll end up with L1 and Championship rejects.

ps - Waggy off to the Rovers ?

Not sure I would class LJ as a L1 'reject' Redprintt.

Much as he didn't feature on my 'wish list' at all, he was very much wanted and respected at Barnsley - and they invited him back for the JPT final which was a nice gesture - and he accepted.

I agree we are unlikely to spend the sort of money needed to see us challenging at the top next season though. We need that Bournemouth scout to come up with some hidden 'gems'.

Important to get in the scout before the transfer window in order to drum up the lists of players we wish to pursue in the summer

    R&W - 'LJ as a L1 'reject'.
    Your memory !!!
Junior was sent out on loan when his father was sacked as he couldn't get a game here.
He had a 3 month loan spell at L1 Chesterfield who were relegated to L2.
Chesterfield dropped him and he returned towards the end of his spell there.
He then went to Pub Football in Scotland - and sacked.
    Junior was fu***ng useless.
His playing career after his father was sacked leading to retirement aged 31 says everything.
No matter how you and others try to dress it up.

Ps - Barnsley fans were aghast with disbelief upon his appointment with us.
It was no wonder, he presided over their worst run of form since 1955.
Oldham fans warned Barnsley fans and they came on our forums warning us over the 'professional ship jumper'.
    We hope they're wrong.

Well well as usual, the boring, tedious, obsessive Johnson slag off by Redprintt..
In my opinion he did well for US (don't care what he did for anyone else) as a player and I'm not sure any other manager could have done any better than he's done since he's been here in the time he's had.........saved us from going down.........JOB DONE (almost!) Can't see how anyone can knock that, unless you hate the guy that much, did he cause you pain in a previous life??!!!

He wouldn't have been my first choice, but unless we lose the rest of our games and MK win theirs, he will at least have received credit for his achievements this year- He has done what SC didn't look like he could do,(although, I will still be eternally grateful for last year).

Next season is where he will be judged and he will have a particularly difficult close season in building what will be his side- Now that he is here and the fact that he is a young manager with plenty of BCFC background, I hope that he is here for years to come and that he may go down as one of our most successful. We will see...
