Pompey will look to put their first League One points on the board when they host Tranmere on Saturday. Both sides were left disappointed on the opening day of the season, falling to defeats against Shrewsbury and Rochdale respectively. Rovers found themselves three goals down on home soil, but netted twice in the closing stages to restore some pride. However, the Merseysiders have enjoyed a remarkable rise under the guidance of Micky Mellon in the past couple of years. He led them to National League promotion with a play-off victory over Boreham Wood in 2018 – just 12 months after they had lost to Forest Green at Wembley. And Tranmere were back at the national stadium last term, dramatically beating Newport at the end of extra-time to seal a spot in the third tier. They have been busy in the transfer market over the summer, with Chelsea loanee Jacob Maddox yesterday becoming the 11th new arrival. It was an entertaining contest when the sides last met at Fratton Park for a League Two contest in February 2015. Rovers roared into a 2-0 lead, but Craig Westcarr reduced Pompey’s deficit before a late Ryan Taylor brace secured victory. TEAM NEWS James Bolton (ankle) is still doubtful for Pompey, while Bryn Morris (groin), Jack Whatmough (knee) and Ryan Williams (quad) are definitely out. Ross McCrorie is available again after serving a one-match ban, while John Marquis is in contention after missing the last game when his partner went into labour. Jake Caprice (ankle), Mark Ellis (knee), Evan Gumbs (knee) and Ishmael Miller (hamstring) are all sidelined for the visitors, with Rushian Hepburn-Murphy suspended. Was unsure whether to go to this game as by the time I checked there were no aisle seats available in the North, South or Fratton Ends and I don't like the Milton End, then there were only tickets available in the Milton End. Checked this afternoon and somehow there was a single ticket left in the North Stand, an aisle seat too, so I snapped that up. Happy days. Hopefully the match will be worth the effort to get a ticket.
I've managed to buy one off a random person in the Fratton End! Should be noisy today. Could be tricky with this wind.
Gonna be tricky getting to the match for me, with both the hovercraft and catamaran currently cancelled
Oh. Not good. It is proper rough out. Not looking good mate unfortunately. Larger ferry probably your only bet.
Hey Woopert, I visited the Isle of Wight for the first time last weekend! It seems a nice place. Though the buses are somewhat irregular...
If you came over to Ryde, Lapras, then the open top bus that travels all over the Island is well worth the money, as long as it a nice sunny day. Takes you virtually everywhere !!
We did come over to Ryde! Spent some time at the beach (ridiculous currents!) and then got the 24 hour bus pass for £10... Didn't seem that bad price wise but but with buses (the Southern Vectis) seeming to be only once an hour, we spent a lot of time waiting for buses. Didn't know about the open top one, maybe a plan for next time... We were hoping to go back some time, as by the time we got the Needles we had about 10 minutes before it closed and we didn't get to the south of the island.
News just in.... Woopert has already started his trip to Fratton Park please log in to view this image
Brilliant !! I hadn't thought of travelling that way ! Having seen the roughness of the sea off of Ryde, I think even the car ferry would be somewhat iffy
89' Brown tucks the ball home after Davies parries Pitman's shot. He looks utterly dejected after spotting the offside flag
First goal was awesome, the second was against the run of play imo. In the second half we weren't great but had a couple of periods of pressure. I don't know if tranmere are a good side or we just were a bit meh.
Good result that in tricky conditions. Wasn't a great game to watch bar the good finish from Close. Thought we were comfortably the better team and could have won by more (post from point blank for example). Wasn't a great performance although I put some of that down to new players gelling, the conditions and the formation. Walks had a poor game. Bonus was the defence which was rock solid in particularly Burgess and our midfield had some bite to it which hasn't been the case for, well, the past 4 or 5 years! Result more important than the performance at this stage of the season.
Saw the catamaran was running at 11.30 am, so rushed down to catch it. Wind had dropped a little, so it was a pretty good trip with the wind behind us all the way ! As for the match, delighted to have made the trip. Good game for us, superb opening goal scored yet again by Ben Close who blasted a stunning volley into the top corner from 30 yards. The win would have been more emphatic but for Andy Cannon's shot being kept out by a post and birthday boy Lee Brown having a goal chalked off for offside. Thought Andy Cannon and Marcus Harnett were excellent, also Paul Downing in defence was solid. As Sharpe* mentioned, once things have settled down, and Kenny has decided on the best formation for the team, we will hopefully have an exciting season ahead.
