Fratton Park will host competitive football once more, with Reading heading south to battle for a place in the second round of the Carabao Cup this evening (7.45pm kick-off). John Mousinho's men will enter the contest in buoyant mood following their opening day Championship victory at Oxford on Saturday. It has not been quite such a successful start for their opponents, however, who have lost their opening two games in League One. Led by Noel Hunt – part of the Pompey side that won the 2016/17 League Two title – they followed a 2-0 defeat at Lincoln by losing on home soil against Huddersfield by the same scoreline. Paddy Lane featured in both those games following his summer switch to the Madejski Stadium, as did ex-Blues loanee Mark O'Mahony. It was only just over a fortnight ago that these two sides met in a pre-season friendly in Berkshire, where goals from Jordan Williams and Callum Lang, plus Colby Bishop's double, sealed a 4-0 victory for the visitors. Pompey also triumphed in both league meetings during the successful 2023/24 campaign, fighting from behind to win 3-2 on the road before securing a 4-1 success back on Portsea Island. But it was Reading who came out on top in the only previous Carabao Cup contest in August 2015, when Conor Chaplin's opener was not enough to prevent a 2-1 reverse in round two. Please note that in the event of the game being goalless at the final whistle, the tie will go straight to penalties. TEAM NEWS Summer signings Márk Kosznovszky and Luke Le Roux will both be hoping to make competitive debuts for Pompey. But the hosts are without the injured trio of Harvey Blair (hamstring), Josh Murphy (hamstring) and skipper Marlon Pack (knee). Paudie O'Connor (calf) and Andy Yiadom (knee) both miss out for the visitors, while Lane and O'Mahony will hope to feature against their former club. Half time, and it's 0-2 to a very impressive Reading side with goals from Garcia in the 34th minute, and K. Ehibhatiomhan in the 38th minute. We have had a couple of chances. Be interesting to see if John Mousinho shakes things up for the second half, possibly bringing on Aussie Adrian Segecic to liven things up a bit!
Final score 1-2 to Reading. We pulled a goal back from academy striker Tayo Singerr in the 93rd minute heading in a lovely cross from sub Adrian Segecic, but it wasn't enough unfortunately. Never mind, our league matches are far more important!
Just seen the final score...pathetic! It is as if the club did not want to progressss, a sentiment shared by quité a few supporters on social media. So what are the fringe players going to be doing now as they were supposed to play in these kind of fixtures? No U21/U23 side. Not many are likely to go Out on loan either

I am a bit annoyed with the result. We should have put out a side that wanted to Winzz. Who will ever forget those great nights playing Liverpool, Tottenham and Manchester United in this competición!:
Very hard to find positives in this performance. Easy to be wise after the event but I tend to agree with Ides comments.. This was basically a completely new team that had not played together previously. The pattern of the first team has been set - particularly in the last friendly and the Oxford game. If changes had been limited to, say three players, it would have been up to the introduced players to fit into the pattern, If they had won there could be one or perhaps two subsequent games in the competition providing more opportunities. It was disappointing that none of the relatively new players were stand out performers. Perhaps Le Roux and Farrel were reasonable but did not put in performances that established them as competing for first team selection. After positive glimpses against Oxford Yang disappointed. He took up good positions which saw him get plenty of the ball but disappointed once in possession. Kosznovsky showed skills but found it difficult to get .to impose himself on the game sufficiently. Onward to the weekend. PUP
It begs the question, where do our owners want us to be. To grow as a club we need to improve our financial flow. For that to happen it needs investment to increase the capacity of Fratton Park (the bridge issue is a red herring), to invest in the club's playing structure regarding a bridge team from the youth to the first team, upgrading the facilities for coaching and training, and finding top class youngsters from the London area not already signed up.by London sides. In this regard Pompey are light years behind Reading.
Disappointed for the loyal fans who paid to go to the game. I think the EFL should bring in a similar ruling that exists in the FL Trophy where there is a limit on the number of changes to the starting lineup from the previous league game. Sides putting reserve/academy sides out is disrespectful to the competition
