Pompey will aim to set a new club record when they host Charlton under the Fratton floodlights this evening.

Kenny Jackett’s side are looking to secure an impressive ninth successive competitive victory in all competitions.

This latest fixture was due to be played last month, only to be postponed when the visitors received three international call-ups.

It is the only game taking place in League One tonight, so gives the Blues a chance to stretch their lead at the top of the table to nine points.

And the home side know that simply avoiding defeat will ensure they are sitting at the summit at Christmas.

Their opponents also have promotion ambitions, having lost to Shrewsbury in the play-offs at the end of last season.

But a four-match winning run in the league was ended by Saturday’s defeat at Blackpool, which saw Charlton drop out of the top six.

A point tonight would see them return there, however, ahead of back-to-back home matches against AFC Wimbledon and Gillingham.

Pompey were beaten 1-0 when the sides met at Fratton Park last term, although did win by that scoreline at The Valley in both the league and Checkatrade Trophy.

    TEAM NEWS
David Wheeler (hamstring) is sidelined and although Dion Donohue has returned to full training, he will feature for the reserve team at Bournemouth this afternoon.

The visitors will be without Josh Cullen (shoulder), Darren Pratley (knee) and Jamie Ward (groin), while Naby Sarry is expected to replace teenager Toby Stevenson at left-back.

    HEAD TO HEAD
    Overall
    Pompey: 46 wins
    Charlton: 34 wins
    27 draws

    At Fratton Park
    Pompey: 28 wins
    Charlton: 15 wins
    11 draws

    BETTING
Pompey are the 8/11 favourites with Sky Bet to secure all three points, while the visitors can be backed at 19/5.

Goal: Pompey 0 Charlton 2 (Ajose)

Pompey think the ball has gone out of play, but the officials disagree and Lapslie crosses for Ajose to poke home at the far post

18-19 players in the 6 yard box and it's kicking off. Pitman gets a yellow as does Sarr. Corner kick for Pompey.

Lowe shows neat trickery in the box before going to the ground, but his penalty appeals are turned down and he's booked for his protests

Thanks for the commentary 3rd eye <ok>

A bad day at the office this evening, not helped by a disgraceful referee who let Charlton get away with everything. They were wasting time as soon as they went 1-0 up, were throwing themselves to the ground after the slightest touch, rolling about on the pitch until the pathetic referee granted them a free kick, and were unfortunately the dirtiest team to play at Fratton Park so far this season !

I have seen a video of the Ben Thompson challenge on Lyle Taylor, which clearly shows that Thompson won the ball. Taylor's writhing around on the pitch cleverly won him a free kick and quite wrongly got our player sent off. I believe that we are to appeal the red card, which based on the video evidence should succeed.

Moments after the red card, another Charlton player fell to the pitch right infront of where I was sitting, clutching his face, after no contact whatsoever, only for the referee to pull him to his feet ! He wasn't even shown a yellow card for diving :steam:

Andre Green looked very positive after coming on for Lee Brown, and scored a nice goal. I think he deserves a run out away to Barnsley this coming weekend.

The attendance was just under 18,000 including around 899 away fans, who must of thought that Christmas had come early for them, with the lousy ref playing the part of Santa <doh>

Reading between the lines it sounded as if Pompey were on edge tonight , and were a tad nervous of Charlton. So the two losses have come against sides from Kent - in times past Charlton would have been Kent.

Clear the heads now, and let´s get back to business on Saturday.

I saw the red card on SkySports news last night shortly after it happened and it was very harsh. Both players threw themselves at the ball and clashed together, there was nothing malicious in it and no one was hurt it was just a very strong robust tackle by both players.

It should be recinded under challenge because it was not worthy of a straight red, you could argue the case of a yellow perhaps on the ground of it being a tad reckless, but that would be pushing it as well because both players attacked the ball with the same ferocity.

I've yet to see the rest of the highlight so I cant comment on the penalty shouts or anything else, but the red card wasn't justified.

Even Lee Bowyer - who thinks Brooks did a good job and got most of the calls in the match right - didn't agree with the red card: https://www.cafc.co.uk/news/view/5c...-strong-following-charltons-win-at-portsmouth

...He said: “To be honest, I thought the red card was a 50/50 tackle. It didn’t look like he went over the top of it, maybe it was a little bit late, but from where I was standing, it was a bit harsh. Maybe the referee had a different angle from me.”...
