Pompey Academy remain top of the Youth Alliance League table following a 2-0 victory over Cheltenham at Copnor Road.

They took the lead when Harry Kavanagh’s cross from the right was lashed into the net by Gerard Storey.

And Ethan Robb wrapped up the points after the break by stooping to head home a corner from Kavanagh.

Academy manager Mark Kelly said: “It was a solid enough performance all round against a big, physical side.

“We didn’t quite find the patterns we were looking for early in the first half, but worked hard and began to take control, with Gerard scoring a good goal.

“The back four and keeper were using the ball really well, linking with the midfield and starting to open the pitch up.

“We continued to dominate in the second half and our wing-backs – Eoin Teggart and Harrison Brook – had a lot of joy.

“There was some really nice football being played from the lads and we were making the correct decisions.

“Ethan’s header doubled our lead and we saw the game out comfortably, being able to bring on some youngsters to take a look at.

“It’s pleasing that the work being undertaken on the training pitch is being developed and transferred into matches.

“Overall, we got into some really positive areas after dealing with Cheltenham’s physicality and got the result we wanted.”

Pompey: Leon Pitman; Harry Kavanagh, Ethan Robb, Liam Kelly; Harrison Brook (Garrett 81), Harvey Rew, Gerard Storey, Charlie Bell (Seok Jae Lee 62), Eoin Teggart; Harry Anderson (Jewitt-White 66), Alfie Stanley
